Stanley arrived in Guatemala in 1968, and immediately identified with his parishioners' simple, farming lifestyle. He learned their languages, prepared them for the Sacraments, and cared for their needs. Fr. Stanley, or "Padre Francisco" as he was called by his beloved Tz'utujil Indians, had found his heart's calling.After nearly a decade, the violence of the Guatemalan civil war found its way into the peaceful village. Disappearances, killings, and danger became daily occurrences, but despite this unrest Fr. Stanley remained hard at work, building a farmer's co-op, a school, a hospital, and the first Catholic radio station, used for catechesis. In early 1981, his name was on a death list, so he returned to Oklahoma and was warned not to return. But he could not abandon his people, so he went back, and made the ultimate sacrifice for his faith. "Pray for us that we may be a sign of the love of Christ for our people," said Fr. Stanley, "that our presence among them will fortify them to endure these sufferings in preparation for the coming of the Kingdom."

About ten years ago, unaware of that a priest had been murdered on the grounds, I was privileged to visit the church at Santiago, Atitlan and enter the room where Fr. Stanley Rother had been assassinated. As I witnessed the bullet embedded in the tile floor, with an eternal flame burning next to it, and saw the splattered blood preserved behind a glass frame, I was overcome with awe, as I sensed that I had entered onto holy ground, a sacred space where a martyr had given his life for Christ and His people. Consequently, my interest in this priest and the efforts that have led to his beatification have left me with a sense of admiration for this faithful shepherd who remained with his people and surrendered his life. Though the prose can seem rather dry at times, I am nonetheless grateful for the opportunity to learn more of this heroic man and the fire of love that burned within him.

This biography is a moving and inspiring account of the life of Father Stanley Rother, a priest from Oklahoma soon to become a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. The author beautifully recounts the life of Father Stan as it unfolds from a devout farm boy to a seminarian whom his teachers did not think was intellectually capable of the priesthood. He was actually dismissed for a while. Due to the vision of his bishop, he was re-instated and became a courageous and totally dedicated priest who was able to learn two languages and speak them fluently! One of those languages was a very difficult language of one of the Mayan peoples of Guatemala. The book is a tribute to the love of Father Stan for the Guatemalan people entrusted to his care. It is also full of insight into the day to day living conditions and culture of the poor in Guatemala.

This was well researched and well written and the author who gave a book talk in the last couple of days indicated Father Rother was defined by being ordinary, being faithful and by being preserving. This priest from a small town in Oklahoma flunked out of his first seminary due to not being able to handle the Latin and yet when he got to Guatemala he not only learned Spanish but learned an ancient maya dialect that the people of Santiago Attitlan spoke and managed to put the mass in their language. I am certain he is on his way to Sainthood. He stayed while he was on a Government "death list" and finally was shot and martyred for his faith.

Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda has written a powerful narrative of the ministry and heroism of the Oklahoma missionary to Santiago Atitlán in Guatemala, Father Stanley Rother. “The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger,” wrote Father Stanley Rother in 1980, and he was martyred the following year on July 28, 1981. Scaperlanda uses interviews and primary sources to write this first biography of the martyred priest, whose canonization is now being considered by the Vatican. It tells the dramatic story of this shepherd who refused to leave his flock and offers inspiration for all who seek to be missionary disciples today.

Scaperlanda has written a straight-forward account of Fr. Rother's self-giving mission to a poor Mayan tribe in Guatemala. While told simply, the story is very powerful. The account of Fr. Rother's last couple of weeks leading up to his martyrdom is riveting. If one has doubts about whether his killers had hatred for the true faith, then reading Scaperlanda's account can help you see how his killers were essentially vincibly ignorant about the Church's mission.

This was an exceptional book written for a very courageous priest who did run away from his flock. He is the first American martyred priest. It was difficult to stop reading this book of Blessed Father Stanley Rother. Now, I feel as if I have another friend in Heaven. I am unable to place this book back on the bookshelf. I keep it next to me on the table where I have most of the books that I love to reread. What a great story of a modern day Saint!

This is an easily-read biography about an ordinary man who lived in an extraordinary way of faithfulness to Christ and the Church. Out of his faithfulness flowed his love for the Tz'utujil, the indigenous people of Guatemala he was called to serve as a missionary priest beginning in 1968. During a time of extreme turmoil in Guatemala in the late 1970's and culminating in 1980, he remained faithful to them and was murdered because he would not abandon them.Author Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda surveys Fr. Rother's life from the time he grew up in Oklahoma, through his struggles in seminary, and his early priesthood in rural Oklahoma. She focuses a great deal on his life as a missionary in Guatemala and his realization that he would likely be killed if he stayed in Guatemala to minister as a priest to the Tz'utujil. The story is placed in the context of St. Pope John XXIII's call to American dioceses to send missionary teams to Latin America, and the call of Vatican II to be a missionary Church.The book is easy to read and is likely suitable for high school students and adults. It tells an inspiring story and I highly recommend it.On December 2, 2016 Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Fr. Rother, making him the first martyr born in the United States. The recognition of his martyrdom cleared the way for his beatification on September 23, 2017 in Oklahoma City.We discussed this book in our Catholic parish book club on 6/15/18 and were in agreement that it is an excellent book on many accounts.
