I had read a review that said to skip the 1.5 book if your kid did well or found the 1 easy. My daughter cruised through 1 so I went back and forth on whether or not to do 1.5 but decided it couldn't hurt. I'm glad I got it. It's a little different but not enough to make it a big leap or repetitive enough to make it boring or too easy. I like for my daughter to be successful and feel almost as if she can do it on her own, while giving her just enough challenge that she stays interested and keeps learning and progressing. So this book is perfect for us. -- as far as explode the code in general, I really love these books! The pictures could use improvement but my daughter 96% of the time can see what they are right off the bat and I never have a problem.

Perfect for my 5 year old. We home school and are working on phonics. We just completed explode the code book 1 and I decided to go with 1 1/2 instead of going into book 2. I’m glad I did. I recommend this book if your student did good in the first one but didn’t strongly grasp all of it. It’s review of the first book with some new concepts added. I don’t know I would probably still have chosen to do this one even if my child had whizzed through the first. It’s good practice and unless your child was bored with the first I would highly recommend.

I have been using Explode the Code books with my son for a little over a year now. I chose them because they seemed to get good reviews and many of the homeschoolers I follow online say they like these books.The books are all simple and straightforward. No need to plan ahead, just pick up and start working. The drawings are simple as well and not too distracting - although a couple times, it wasn't very clear to me what the drawings were indicating.Overall, though, they are very easy to use and my son doesn't argue about doing his work at all. I think, though, that the 1/2 issues are not really necessary for my son now, because he seems to get a little bored sometimes. I think this is just because we are reviewing content he has already mastered. So, if your child is doing well, skip the 1/2 issues and move ahead to the next full level book.

I've used Explode the Code for years wth students learning to read with phonics. The drawings are fun and the learning is sequential with multiple practices. The phonics skill is then practiced in comprehension exercises.

We love Explode The Code. My daughter just finished the first book but wasn't ready to go on to number 2. I love these half books for extra practice

Absolutely fantastic! Loved Explode the Code 1, and my daughter still needed a little more review. This book is perfect! LOVE!

It keeps the lessons fresh and allows for more practice. My only issue is that some of the pictures are very subjective to interpretation which throws the little one. That is my only complaint so far.

My child loved the quirky sentences and it was the perfect resource for cementing understanding of phonics.

About the Author

Francine Johnston is retired from the Department of Teacher Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she served as Director of Graduate Studies, Coordinator of the Reading Masters Program, and ran a clinic for struggling readers. Francine worked as a first grade teacher and reading specialist for 12 years before getting her doctorate at the University of Virginia where she first learned about a developmental approach to word study and worked with Dr. Marcia Invernizzi to develop word study materials and activities. She consults with school districts across the country and frequently serves as a professional development speaker. Francine is a co-author of many books, including Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction. Donald R. Bear is Professor Emeritus in Literacy and Director of Literacy Centers at Iowa State University and University the University of Nevada, Reno. A former elementary teacher, Donald currently researches literacy development with a special interest in students who speak different languages and he partners with schools and districts to think about how to assess and conduct literacy instruction. Marcia Invernizzi is Henderson Professor of Reading Education in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. She and her multilingual doctoral students enjoy exploring developmental universals in non-English orthographies. A former English and reading teacher, Marcia extends her experience working with children who experience difficulties learning to read and write in numerous intervention programs, such as Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative and Book Buddies. Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor Emeritus of Literacy Studies in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. A former classroom teacher at the primary and secondary levels, he has focused his research on the development of orthographic and vocabulary knowledge. He has written several books on the teaching and learning of reading and language arts and is a member of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. This is my tenth year teaching but the first year I have used Words Their Way in place of the spelling program that came with our reading series. I cannot say enough good things about the program.If you are new to Words Their Way, you will need the big book that goes into great detail about this approach and how to manage it. However, this skinny red book is the book that has been my go-to this semester. After giving the Qualititative Spelling Inventory (QSI) at the beginning of the year, I placed students in spelling groups. Most students were in the alphabetic spelling stage and that's where this book has been invaluable! If you teach first grade, I recommend getting this book and the next one (within a word spellers-the yellow book). Unless you teach language learners or special education, these two books may be all you need for your week-to-week instruction in first grade. I keep sticky notes in my red book to remind me where each group is at and every couple weeks or so I run the copies for upcoming instruction. (The best part is, most of the time you need ONE copy per student for the ENTIRE week of spelling/phonics instruction! That's it-no other worksheets!) Then I just move the sticky notes so I will know where to pick up the next time I go to run copies!I have seen such progress with ALL of my students this semester. I gave the QSI again before we left for break and I was so pleased with the progress from the beginning of the year to now. Students who came to me in August not yet having mastered initial consonants have moved on to using short vowels and in some cases blends and digraphs. Meanwhile, more advanced spellers who came in knowing some blends and digraphs are ready to work on long vowel patterns. I am almost certain I would not have seen this kind of growth for all students with the old "one size fits all" spelling and phonics curriculum that came with our basal series. I love that Words Their Way is differentiated and developmentally appropriate! If you are considering this program, you really must invest in the word sort books like this one that are appropriate for your grade level or age group. They are invaluable time savers and make implementing the Words Their Way approach a breeze.

I love Words Their Way! The way they organize teaching phonics and word study is very logical. I like the process of having students really look at patterns in words, but not neglect "oddballs" or rule-breakers. I would definitely recommend this program to other teachers. My only complaint would be the font that they use for the word sorts. The lowercase "a" has the curl on top (just like this font!) which is not how we teach children to write "a" anymore. I do think they should be able to recognize both ways so it's not a problem, but I would have preferred a more modern kid-friendly font.

I use this curriculum to teach spelling and love the kinesthetic and visual approach to learning. It teaches the patterns in a comprehensive way, building upon itself as you move through the levels. Most notably, the pre-assessment is an excellent tool. If you are purchasing this, you will need to buy the administrators book as well in order to have the assessment and to learn the different ways to use this program.

Words Their Way individual word sort books are so very helpful. These books make the process of teaching with Words Their Way easier and so simple to understand.

I got this book to supplement the Words Their Way K and I'm so excited to use it with the kids this year. Everything is clear and easy to use and the students really enjoy the sorts. I like that they are working at different levels according to their skill, and I don't have to reinvent the wheel. I'm so happy with these books.
