Very enjoyable book. A bit different in the writing style than most books. You get a feel for Velvet as a character and her likable but somewhat quirky family, who are all given personalities and some background. Story diverges quite a bit from the classic movie with Elizabeth Taylor but the basic points are still there. A young girl obsessed with horses wins a talented horse in a lottery and then goes on to ride horse in the grueling steeplechase that is the Grand National with the help of the family friend named Mi. The book is a few decades old now, so it assumes some basic knowledge of what the Grand National is, as well as how hard it would be for a young girl to ride in the race. Also some not common words like gymkhana used quite a bit but still able to be followed without too much googling or dictionary opening.
I don't believe the book I received was a first edition. It shows a renewed copyright date of 1963. First copyright was 1935. This book is interesting in that it is difficult at times to understand. Dialogue is colloquialistic of the time and place and almost a foreign language to today's reader. I vaguely remember the original movie, but didn't realize that it was so loosely based on the book. The main character in the book is described as homely, but they chose a beauty like young Elisabeth Taylor to play her part in the movie! The family runs a slaughter house in the book. Was that in the movie? I'm going to watch the movie again after reading the book just for fun to see how different it is. I would say for a kid to read this book today, they would understand very little that the people were saying or describing.
I have loved this book since I was 11 years old. Actually it’s a novel best read by adults or teens. Wonderful themes of family life, love of horses, going after ones dreams. Strongly feminist too! Set in rural England between the two world wars, language and unusual cultural ideas could make it difficult for very young children.
I read this book several times when I was a child and teenager, but then lost my copy in the shuffle of life. The Kindle version has a few errors but overall is terrific and includes the little horse sketches that appeared in the original. It is a lovely story and full of wonderful nuances of family life.
I owned the hardcover until it disintegrated and I was very happy to find it on Kindle. I got hooked on them all. They became part of my inner family and it was so good to live the adventure once again and scratch Jacob's ears again.
Worth every word. Interesting to read the original after seeing the movie so many times.
Purchased this book as a gift, as it was one of my favorite books when I was a child. No better book for the budding horse addict!
