Honestly, this is one of those times I wish I could find it in myself to just lie in a review because of how much easier it would be. And in this case, it really would be. I sit here at the computer struggling to put my thoughts into words, knowing I'll likely fail on all accounts. I've said this in so many other reviews, but it's never been more true than now, because some reviews are so much bigger than me... Like this one. I did want to love this book, but it was just so shocking I couldn't finish. I haven't finished. I don't know if I ever will. And the thing about me is if a book turns out to be a do-not-finish, it usually means a one or two star review...but here I am calling it five. Why?I absolutely will get to that, but first, I feel like I need to expound on why it was so shocking to me.This book is blunt, and though I have called other books blunt, this one is more so. The text is filled with descriptions of bodily functions, and unrefined actions and behavior. There is discourse on phlegm, spitting, spurting streams while using the bathroom... There are descriptions of places where taxi drivers stop to use the restroom, which is really just a dirt pile where they leave their gifts for all to see... I wouldn't say I am unusually sensitive to blunt writing, but this book was just too far outside my limits, and the further I read, the more I began bracing and cringing, wondering what I'd end up reading next. The passage that finally sparked the first idea of do-not-finish for me was this one:"Wufu had brought even less trash than me. Most of it was toilet paper, soiled with crap and menstrual blood. Hordes of flies had chased the toilet paper here."I did make it quite a way further, but that was the beginning of the end for me. And if the book made me cringe, and I found it so shocking, why am I leaving a five star review? Which is where my struggle to put thought into words will likely fail, and if it does, then I sincerely apologize. I want, very much, to express myself clearly, so that others can perhaps use this review to decide if this book is for them. But I am just at such a loss on how to best go about that. I guess what it comes down to is that I'm giving it five stars because when I researched the author I read this: "Jia is known for his realistic depiction of the culture and life of Shaanxi Province.", and all I can think is how can I possibly give a one/two star review to a life--not a book, an actual life--that for all appearances, people actually lived? How does one be that shallow and blind? That callous and cruel? The thought is unthinkable to me. If the depictions in this book are accurate, the people who lived such lives deserve respect and acknowledgment, and the reality shouldn't be glossed over so that some American reader with apparently too-delicate of sensibilities can feel more comfortable. Not only that, but if a book's only crime is bluntness, and it is otherwise beautifully written, how is a lesser review justified? This book was raw, and was indeed written in a way that was utterly fascinating. While considering it for my Kindle First selection I read an editorial review comparing it to Don Quixote, and I think it an apt comparison. The writing was often witty, and I didn't consider it so much a story as an entrance into a mind. The way the thoughts and ideas flowed was captivating, never quite settling, always moving along. One of my favorite passages was this one:"I told him, 'Take them off! Why are you wearing leather shoes? You're not a leather shoes man! You're a country bumpkin! People will think you stole them!' Wufu's toes were squeezed so tight, they'd swollen up like red radishes."I don't know if I will ever finish this book, which causes me a decent amount of shame. I've never wanted to bury my head in the sand, or have "delicate sensibilities". I don't think those are flattering descriptions of me, and right now I feel I deserve them. I firmly believe that for many, this book will be a rare gem. A glimpse into another world, another life, another mind. I think it's beautifully written and alluring. But it's also shocking--so much so that I, personally, couldn't finish. If you are a fan of literary classics, you will likely love this book. However, if you, like me, don't have as strong a stomach as you'd wish, then perhaps consider this book carefully before purchase.

Was the book blunt? Yes. Please don't let that description scare you off. I can't tell you the number of absolute stinkers Amazon has put up for their Kindle First selections and this is NOT ONE OF THEM.It was a very detail filled peek into the life of a man who left the impoverished countryside (Freshwind) of China for a hopefully better life in the city X'i'an. Happy takes along his friend and the book chronicles their lives as they settle into city life as trash collectors. The city they move to is really complex because it has such a conglomeration of different classes of people all struggling for the dream of "making it".Do people defecate outdoors, spit on the ground and generally act like they were raised in a barn? A RESOUNDING YES. It's a peek at the real life of people with some frank talk. An elder man teases Happy's friend Wufu that his wife is lonely at home with a cucumber or possibly her father in law to comfort her. It's locker room talk but felt that nothing at all in the dialogue was forced or salacious. These are men goading eachother and poking at one another. People fart, it a natural body function. When men urinate standing up they sometimes miss the mark, that should not preclude you from reading a fantastic story. ( I want to mention that when I read Anne Frank's Diary last month there was some very real talk about bathroom habits and smells and menstrual blood, it's called reality). This book should not be pigeon holed as Asian Literature even if it is based on the life of a man who happens to reside in China. The book translation was flawless.Wonderfully written, well developed characters allowed me to tear through it. People are depicted with all their flaws, no sugar coating. I can only say that I read it all the way through and felt it was one of the better Kindle First choices I have read. Nothing was written that an adult should not be able to see as true life with no white washing.

Having grown up in the American Midwest, this story was one I could not relate to in any way. However, I found that I couldn't put it down until I finished the book. I love historical fiction as it helps me to understand better the personal side of what has happened in far away places. What makes people think and act the way they do? I felt that this author used colorful characters and yet made them very believable. You can almost smell the odors and hear the sounds as you follow Happy on his journey. What was inspirational to me is that in this story of poverty and suffering, you see that a person can rise above the circumstances that surround them and even influence others around them. If you take a step back and look at the overall setting of the story, you see a culture of hopeless existence. But if you take a step closer and look into the lives of the characters, and see how a person like Happy can take his circumstances and approach them from a happy perspective, it can't help but inspire you to be a better person.

I enjoyed this book and the characters. All of them are quite unforgettable. I could feel the sweat on the trash pickers backs, smell the pickled vegetable water, and ache with their daily job. This book takes you into an incredibly harsh life that we can only imagine. It's a rough life and tough to read in places but worth the journey.
