The reasons why I give this book five stars is best understood simply by reading what I wrote about this subject in my own book. NOTE that I promote Douglas Del Tonto's in the book I have published. This is why Douglas Del Tonto's book is so important. . ."Those who are not Christian perhaps do not understand what most Christians believe, and therefore they make the mistake of thinking that a great number of churches in the area translates to plenty of warm people who will eagerly help them out. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most denominations of Christianity teach that a person is spiritually saved merely by having faith in Jesus Christ. They do not teach that you must do good works for salvation. If Christians were taught that they had to exert themselves and go out and do good works in order to earn a right into the Kingdom of Heaven, then—in consideration of the number of Christians in the world—the world would be changed overnight. If Christians believed that they actually had to get up and help others, and do good deeds, in order to be saved, then the homeless problem would disappear in a matter of mere hours because everybody would be rushing out to earn a ticket into heaven. But this is not what they are taught. They believe that after they declare faith in Jesus Christ, they don’t have to lift a finger, and their entry into the Kingdom of Heaven is ensured. The belief I have just stated—being saved by faith alone—comes from a convert to Christianity named Saul, who later came to be known as Paul. An early Christian sect called the Ebionites rejected the teachings of Paul, but his teachings would later to be printed in the popularly accepted canon of the New Testament, which comprises twenty-seven books. There is a growing number of Christians today who reject the teachings of Paul, and who go so far as to claim that he is nothing more than a liar who infiltrated early Christianity and falsely claimed to be an apostle. These Christians argue that faith in Jesus Christ must be accompanied by doing good deeds in order to receive salvation from God. For more information about Christians who believe that faith and good deeds are both requirements for salvation, I suggest the book Jesus' Words Only or Was Paul the Apostle Jesus Condemns in Revelation 2:2 by Douglas Del Tonto, and the website JesusWordsOnly.com In my experience I have not been impressed with Christians of any type. In my homeless travels across the United States, I was helped by more people who were expressly non-Christian, rather than believers. While it is true that some Christians did help me, and it is also true that there are shelters, soup kitchens and other aid services for the homeless that are offered by Christians, when it comes to who might help you among the general public, in all likelihood, the few who will extend a helping hand will not be Christian. Why? It is as I said: Christians do not believe they need to lift a finger to help anybody, so why should they? As for those who believe the teachings of Jesus contradict the doctrine of Paul—and who therefore believe that faith in Jesus must be accompanied by good works—I have yet to meet a single person who demonstrated that they believe in that doctrine no matter how much they preached it. I am not saying they do not exist, I just haven’t met any. While there have been people who claimed to be Christian who helped me, I do not know of any who did so because they believed doing good was necessary for spiritual salvation. In other words, their religion didn’t teach them to go out and do good, they just did good deeds because they’re good people—despite their religious affiliation. To further put things in perspective, thousands of homeless people die each year from all manner of causes. Hundreds of homeless human beings die each year in the United States from hypothermia alone. According to a 2006 report from the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, the life expectancy for a homeless person in the U.S. is 50 years, compared to the normal life expectancy of 78 years. Many homeless people die from preventable causes such as communicable diseases, heart problems, cancer, hypothermia and hate crimes. In the colder regions of the United States, the risk of death from hypothermia and frostbite is eight times that of the non-homeless. Between the years 1999 – 2005, the National Coalition for the Homeless recorded 472 violent crimes against homeless people by non-homeless people; 169 of which were murders. According to Social Solutions, there were 564,708 homeless people in the United States in the year 2015, and 15% of those people are chronically homeless as opposed to people who are merely temporarily coach-surfing, or living in a family member’s garage or basement. With these facts in mind, it should be clear to anyone that there are a whole lot of human beings who really, truly and desperately need help. Meanwhile there are literally hundreds of millions of people who call themselves Christians, who believe they are superior to their fellow man because—in their belief—they have a ticket into the Kingdom of Heaven that they have purchased for the low-low price of mere faith. They believe they don’t have to do not one good thing, and they have secured their seat in the Christ’s Kingdom. When a church van passes you by in the middle of the Arizona desert, and literally leaves you there to die, but a couple of half-drunk meth heads stop to pick you up in their dilapidated RV because they don’t have the heart—or, rather, the lack thereof—to watch you bake in the scorching sun on the side of the road, you might start changing your tune about Christianity as well. Why did the drug addicts, who most people would look down upon, decide to pull over and help me? Because, despite their downfalls, they are real human beings who have heart. I cannot say the same for the others." - How to Live in a Storage Unit or Other Place You Don't Belong by John Casper “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me food: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in. Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” – Matthew 25:35 - 40

You will be amazed at the things that are sitting there in YOUR BIBLE that you have been blind to. This book will open your eyes. Paul's movement was separate and apart from that of the Jerusalem church. Do you want to know what happened to the religion of Jesus? Look for the term "Judaizer". That's what you'll find them called throughout the ages as they are persecuted and "delivered to Satan for the destruction of the flesh" by the Christians. Why? Paul.Among my 15 or so books on the subject, this is my #1 reference book.

Should be called "YAHSHUA's Words Only". An excellent book if you have ever wondered why Paul's epistles (writings) seem to speak in a kind of double talk. He was only a man, and not one of the 12 Apostles, so we may have to decide that his writings are for edification, not for inspiration, as we accept the writings of the Old Covenant and the words of the 12 apostles before his. We are blind if we follow man (like we do Paul with what he says, especially when he contradicts what YAHSHUA says) because we must check everything told to us and be like the Bereans who were deemed righteous because they checked everything. We must study to show ourselves approved.YAHWEH and YAHSHUA are all in all, not Paul! This book is worth reading and studying!!!

While I don't agree with everything this author says, it is a great discussion to be had. We cannot as believers choose to live with our heads in the sand. We have to address controversial topics such as this head on. If you have the courage, get this book and prayerfully read through it with an open hand. For too long, we've allowed Paul to dictate our theology and church life instead of allowing our Lord and His words to do so. Excellent book!

Excellent work, This book inspired me to look closer at the scriptures with a clearer understanding how the bible is structured and written.Modern christianity is nothing but superstition and works of the vatican priesthood. Jesus has warned us about this but we did not listen!Jesus warned us that after his departure ravaging wolfes will come in and distort the truth, they will come and say there he is in the desert!Paul the benjamite a roman citizen has met jesus in the desert! giving you the gospel according to PAUL! 13th apostle and 13 books written in the new testament. Let that sink in.Highly recommened

This book is extremely needed for believers in Yeshua! There are not many voices out there that are willing to pinpoint the problem in Christianity and confront it. He brings out that the Hebrew Gospel of Matthew was the first and only book in the first Canon of the New Testament by the Ebionites 64-70 AD and they completely rejected Paul's epistles because they promoted lawlessness, rejecting the Law of Moses (Galatians 2,3,and 4). Sadly, the Ebionites' voice was snuffed out by, first, the Jerusalem Council, and the growing gentile church after the 70AD Roman destruction of Jerusalem. Unfortunately, every Canon since then has included Paul's letters. Yeshua's words, which The Father in Heaven says we are to listen to above anyone else as His Beloved Son, cannot be harmonized with Galatians! See Matthew 5:19 - also chapters 7, 12, 13, 25! Choose who you are going to follow - Yeshua or Paul!

I adore spooky stories and these are really captivating. It is amazing how they almost don't repeat thematics but are so many aspects in the supernatural in this chronicle of Japanese traditions. Some stories have a ghostly aspect, others are instead quite realistic and others are product of traditions and superstitious fears. Although the style at beginning seemed to me a bit slow it quickly grew on me.Lafcadio Hearne wrote it when Japan had just decided to be a modern country, a change made in a Japanese way, and in the care for explain the words is noticeable that he really loved to know that historic Japan that perhaps has survived in our days. There are some afterwords by interesting observations about insects, they are not related to the core theme of the book but nevertheless I found them interesting. The kindle edition has not been completely well formatted: you cannot click the notes to go to the referenced text. They are just at the end so (as this is not a physical book) as they impractical to review I just read the tales without them until I got to the very end.

The first part of this book contains a mix of 8 "strange" (as the title suggests) stories. The stories are an eclectic assortment of ghost tales and legend but all of them will most likely seem strange to the Western mind. Individually, the stories seem confusing, perhaps even without point, but take them as a whole and they begin to paint a picture. They lend the reader a strong sense of the Eastern mind. It is really, quite a lovely collection. The second part of this book, contains a collection of three "essays", if you will, on insects. In particular, a sampling of insects which hold some place within Japan's culture or customs - butterflies, mosquitos and ants are covered here. To my mind, this is an unfortunate departure from the first half of the book's legends and tales. The information will likely seem a bit dry as Lafcadio Hearn (LH) hails from a different time and to many modern minds, I would think the words of his essays may seem rambling. Nonetheless, they are interesting in and of themselves for the information within. If I were to truly pick apart the fine particulars of the two subject matters, I could surely list some fine argument here as to why they are brought together as one, but in the end, the contrast is greater than the benefit. I find they cause quite some disharmony when brought together. Two last notes for this e-book version: 1) there may be some off-putting words to the modern mind in this book's introduction, which LH had written in January of 1904, in the earliest hours of the Russo-Japanese War. For example, LH references Japanese soldiers on their war boats as "little men", etc. If you can forgive these words as those from a different time, the meat of this book will be your reward, and 2) for those that appreciate additional information, endnotes are included at the end of each tale.Lafcadio Hearn is well enough known to both Japanese and Westerners alike, and well enough respected by both for his translations of Japanese tales that it would seem almost criminal for a Western student of things Japanese, to completely ignore his works. This book and any of his compilations of Japanese ghost stories and legends are highly recommended.

Lafcadio Hearn is my favorite Western writer when it comes to the subject of Japanese legends, folk stories and other kinds of supernatural stories which you can find in Japan. This book contains stories that he heard and wrote down, all with notes about what is it, so we can know what is all about because Hearn was very diligent about describing Japanese culture the way Japanese people see it, not the way the Westerners see it.It also contains stories that Hearn witnessed himself, so we can see the way he reacts to some events which occurred in front of him or was told to him, which is, in my opinion, very interesting read, because usually Hearn just writes down what he was told and his opinion is, except the part he likes those stories and finds those supernatural events interesting, usually very professional and objective.Very good book for those who want to see Japan from a different perspective.

I first read this book in 1959 when I was stationed in Japan. I, never heard of the author but found that the Japanese were very familiar with his writings. This book is scary and memorable. I had to have it for the memories of my youth.

A charming collection of mostly supernatural Japanese tales. The charm extends to the three essays of natural history at the very end (Butterflies, Mosquitoes, and Ants), with the possible exception of the last, which has no connection whatsoever with Japan (whereas the first two emphatically do) and which does not do honor to LH's philosophical acuity (so say I).

To be clear, this review is for the March 15, 2005 edition of this book. The book is of good quality, pages are the right thickness, and the cover is beautiful. I am a firm believer than the cover of a book can indeed change how you view the stories inside that book. The stories are wonderful, and the insect studies at the end of the book are very interesting. The insect studies talk a lot about Chinese origins of stories related to them, especially butterflies. The stories themselves are great, and the way Hearn writes is very smooth and not boring. This is a book everyone should have a copy of if they are interested in short stories, or Japan. This is the kind of book you can re-read in a few months and still enjoy.

#20,246 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm a big fan of cryptograms so I appreciate this book, despite the errors, but I've found at least three so far (I'm on page 59 of a 94-page book) and these cannot go without being remarked upon. Two of these are errors from the book itself. Isaac (as in Isaac Newton) is misspelled as "Issac" in the solution; in another puzzle, there is a "then" where there should be a "than". The third error, curiously, seems to come from the original quote itself, which reads, "It is one thing to use text to illustrate a point one us making, but quite another to quote merely to demonstrate the excellence of one's memory." Unless I am missing something (a joke, perhaps, that I don't get), "us" in this quote should be "is". The quote is from Gore Vidal, who I wouldn't expect to have made such an error but I've searched the quote online and it turns up the same everywhere, i.e. with "us" instead of "is". But, regardless of who made the error, the "us" in this quote is misleading, so either the puzzle should have been corrected or omitted.I looked for a contact address on the website to where I can send a message pointing out these errors out but there doesn't seem to be any.

I have worked most of the books of cryptograms from AMZ, some of them twice. This one has mostly new quotes from many new people. I found it interesting and challenging. The format is nice, size and spacing good, and the paper is very nice. I would recommend this book to someone looking for a little more challange

I have been doing cryptogams for 30 years. I have purchased many books of cryptograms and have worked thousands of puzzles. This book contains 269 cryptograms--a good number. I like that there are a fairly large number of shorter more challenging cryptograms compared to other books of puzzles I have worked. Some books contain a large number of long cryptograms which are "no brainers".The letter font of the cryptoquotes is sufficiently large and so is the line spacing. Unfortunately the letter spacing is tight. Those who work cryptograms will immediately see that it is not easy to write the substitute letters above the ones in the book. The substitute letters tend to get jumbled together making it more difficult to solve the puzzle. It is especially difficult to work the puzzles on an airplane when the hand isn't steady.

There's a misprint in this book at the beginning of one of the quotes. You'll spend forever working it before you realize the word that starts the quote is actually not part of it. Finally finished the quote and determined that it had the be a misprint and sure enough, when I checked the solution in the back of the book, that entire word wasn't in the solution. Extremely frustrating to work a book with such a huge mistake in it. I sure wish this company would actually work their cryptogram books as part of the editing process to weed out such careless mistakes. This is the second book by these folks that I've worked with a mistake in it.

Entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking quotes. Medium to challenging level of difficulty to decode. Two levels of hints to assist as well as the solution.

This is the best cryptograms book I've found. The puzzles are quotes from a wide variety of people like Isaac Newton, Al Capone, Mr. T, Vincent Van Gogh, Jay Leno and Aristotle. None are preachy or full of stale husband and wife jokes. They also contain "unusual" words. For example: cobwebs, promenade, tickle, cholesterol. I like this aspect because it's harder to guess the word with only a few letters solved. The type is large enough and there's plenty of room between words and letters. My only complaint is that it isn't spiral bound. I prefer puzzle books to lie flat.

Working on it each night before bed...keeps my mind active and after a few I can drift off. The puzzles are not too easy not too difficult.I am around 30 in and have not used any hints yet... Good space to work between lines ...only drawback is that I would like to see it sold in a spiral book as it's a little more difficult doing the left side when opened...you won't be disappointed buying this book.

This doesn't do it for me, and I do a lot of cryptograms. It doesn't have that flow. A lot of very short quotes. And a lot of the quotes are like meh, dumb. And, personally, I prefer a spiral bound puzzle book, but that is hard to find. It's hard to find cryptogram books, period! So, if you are hard up, you may want to try this book.
