He also traveled through much of Europe. After college, he interned with Costa Rica's Tico Times, getting his first exposure to travel writing and photography, in addition to covering then-President Bill Clinton's visit to Guatemala. Al worked briefly for a newspaper in the Virgin Islands before moving on to photography school in Hawaii. He also taught English to college students in Thailand for a time, continuing to satiate the travel bug that bit him years back.Al now lives in Austin, Texas, where he's managed to stay put in one place for an unprecedented three years. In addition to writing, he does freelance travel photography for clients that have included US Airways, Caribbean Travel & Life, Condé Nast Traveler, Outside's GO, and Continental. This area is not as well known as popular destinations to the north and south. So this is a good introduction, specialized to the region. I liked that it included a lot of details about so many little towns and tourist sites.I was staying in the area for several weeks and found this knowledge useful. But also, after several weeks I saw that there were plenty of useful details which must be out of date since they were just plain wrong. Nothing that would ruin your visit, but considering my copy is dated 2009 I didn't think there was much excuse to leave out useful resources like ATMs, currency exchange, internet access which have been there for years. I might have easily gone right past them to ones that were much farther out of my way. I should mention that none of these are common here yet. Also, the guide to Tikal is well out of date, which is unfortunate since this is the most popular site in the whole area. But I still recommend it to someone who is spending significant time in the area as I was. For others, I might consider a more comprehensive and up to date book even if it is not specific to this place.
Its very sparest, but better than nothing. The author really weds to make a return trip and add to it without making it into a larger format. It dispenses with the Lonely Planet's unending pages of lists to housing an dubs transportation, so it is more efficient.
I found this book very informative, it includes to the point descriptions of all ranges of accomodations, food comedores and other places of interest, and tips on what to do and not. You can find in this book street maps of Flores, Santa Elena and the layout of Tikal ruins, also a map of the diferent Mayan sites scattered through the Departamento of Peten. Lines of history can be read for most arqueologic structures, very few pictures are shown, being all them in black and white.
When I received this guide it had not been printed correctly so many letters and words were missing in the text. I returned it with this explanation and requested a second copy. The second arrived with the same printing problems.
We spent 6 weeks in the Peten region of Guatemala. This guide book was perfect for us. It's small and light but it's got good detailed coverage of the region. My only criticism is that it lacked an index or any general historical or other background information.
