This is a fun little book that provides a gentle introduction to the ways of Episcopalians. As my old church secretary used to say, `If you can spell it, you can be it.' (And my apologies for calling her old - it is my `old church' rather than the secretary who is old!)The introduction states, `Prepare for possibility over peril, imagination over anxiety, and dreams over danger.' To enter an unfamiliar church can be a daunting thing - even Episcopalians find it a bit disconcerting at times to go to a church other than their own, since individual parishes adapt the overall structure of liturgical and communal practice to their own peculiarities. There is a broad range of shared elements - the Book of Common Prayer in some shape will be evident (although sometimes this will be more prevalent in the photocopied all-in-one bulletins for the service that some churches prepare to avoid the constant switching of books during the service). On the other side, there will be different practices - some kneel during much of the Eucharistic portion of the service, some stand, and some sit, and sometimes you'll find all three in the same parish (and there are fewer things more awkward than to be a kneeler behind a stander in such situations!).This handbook draws extensively from the Book of Common Prayer, but serves to highlight key elements of the service and other useful portions in a less-crowded way (historically speaking, the BCP has never been the most user-friendly of texts in terms of organization). What to do, what to say, even what to wear to church (and this can vary, depending upon whether one attends a funeral, a wedding, Easter services, daily masses, etc.) is covered here. There is humour as well as serious stuff in here, and as is true with all humour, it appeals to particular tastes at times (and some of the humour requires a bit of insider knowledge to fully get the jokes).The book also addresses some similarities and differences with other denominations - one chapter is entitled `Why the Episcopal Church is (and isn't) Catholic Lite', and other portions show liturgical and non-liturgical churches in a comparative chart. It is written in a style that is not too serious, making light of something that really stressed the point much more than it would have with a serious somber tone. Who said learning about the Church and its trappings has to be all serious! Recommend for anyone new to the Episcopal Church or who just wants to refresh their knowledge of it.

This is a wonderful book. The author offers a broad, simple view of the Episcopal church, excellent for a newcomer to the denomination, or an inquirer looking for answers about whether or not this church is for them. Some may think it's "too" basic, but for someone coming from a different denomination (perhaps especially a non-Catholic), the information is helpful and just deep enough for someone dipping their toe into a new denomination to get their questions answered (including some questions you might not have known you had), without being overbearing or intimidating. Also contains some good resources for further research if you would like.

This was the previous version of the Episcopal Handbook and it is great. It just does not contain some information that happened in the Church after 2003.

McManus is an outstanding writer. He is probably my favorite living author. I would rate most of his books as 5 stars without hesitation. However, this book is inconsistent: Some stories are hysterical, but some are only "OK." This is pretty much what the author warns at the beginning, so he cannot be faulted (he's just publishing a bunch of "odds and ends" stories). I am enjoying it, and it's still worth getting, IMO, but it's not at the level of his other books. (However, there is one story that may be the funniest thing I have ever read, which is worth the cost of the book!)

WARNING - Although I absolutely love the work of Patrick McManus, this CD does NOT play on most CD players. It is recorded in "MP3-CD" format and is "IPOD READY". Therefore, it is not compatible with the overwhelming majority of CD players in the world, including most portable players and those found in homes and most vehicles. I tried them all and the CD's won't play. It will play fine on your computer but if you want to play it anywhere else do NOT buy this product! Make sure you get one recorded in regular CD audio. The seller does not adequately warn consumers about this vital fact. Buyer Beware!

I recently listened to the Audible Audio version of this book. Years ago I read the print version. I really enjoy all of the author's books but I never thought that this particular collection was as good as some of the others. I was really disappointed with the narrator. Not so much because he did a poor job but really because he wasn't Norman Dietz who so perfectly captures McManus in most of the other Audible recordings. I wouldn't hesitate to add this to your collection but only after you have all the books narrated by Dietz.

I would rate almost anything written by Pat McManus five stars. If you do not like humor don't read his books. If you do and have ever done any camping, boating, hunting or fishing you will love him. Things he writes about many of us have experienced to a lesser degree when we have been in the outdoors. Kerplunk is typical of his writing and makes very good reading.Glenn

As a long-time McManus fan, I have to admit, up front, that this is not his best collection. Still, it's all McManus which means the worst you're going to get is very, very good. It was nice to revisit some of the old characters (Crazy Eddie, Retch, and Rancid) and meet some new ones, and, yes, there were plenty of laughs.The highlight, for me, was "The Christmas Goose." It's hard to go wrong with a Rancid Crabtree story!Overall Kerplunk had something of a "thrown together" feel, and left me wondering if we might be losing the old Pat McManus collections to the new Bo Tully mysteries (which are wonderful, by the way.)Regardless, if you, like many of us, are a devoted fan, you'll want to add this one to your collection. Like slightly fuzzy photos, it may not be framing quality, but it still brings back some great memories and more than a few chuckles.-Perry

I was very sick after a surgery and was laughing to much reading this book and others by McManus that I had to put it down at time for the tears in my eyes. So funny.

We have most all of Patrick McManus books! He is an awesome & funny writer. Writes about his life events! Met him in person several times & he is GREAT! Very funny & awesome outlook on life & his past adventures!

After two years practically removed from horses, I ended up with a young horse & started working. I'd trained the horse I raced successfully on before and never had any problems, so why not? Wow... After a year & a half I literally couldn't work the pattern without ending up in tears. I've actually considered selling out & giving up. But after a pretty painfully honest heart - to - heart with my Dad, I decided to start from scratch & give it one more try. Thus began the never-ending search for helpful and useful knowledge.I know the basic mechanics; after all, I've trained a barrel horse before, & I've ridden my entire life. So finding a helpful book that wasn't repeating things I already know was a challenge, and I actually stumbled on this book & looked at it a couple of times before I bought it.I am SO glad I did! This is NOT a training manual. It won't tell you how to teach a horse to do things like flex and counter arc. But what it WILL do is JUST as important, maybe more. I have read Heather's story and said to myself "This is me!" This book had me in tears, simply by explaining some of the emotions I've gone through. Finally. Someone who "gets" it.I read the whole thing in less than 2 days, and now I'm reading it again to absorb more information.I would recommend this book to anybody who is struggling, even the top NFR girls out there. It won't teach you what to do, but it'll teach you how to get there without a nervous breakdown. Or how to recover from it & get back on track :)

When I first got this book I thought it was for training horses. If that is what your looking for this book is not for you. I will not lie, it took a little bit before I really got into reading this book because I got it with the mind set it was for how to train a horse for barrels. However, once I got into the first few chapters and figured out its all about training or retraining the rider I really got into it. The author really focuses on how you think is how you will perform. She really got me to take a step back and look at why my horse was doing what they were doing. Turns out, it had nothing to do with how I had trained them, it had to do with what I was thinking about when I would try and make a run. This book has helped me with more than just barrels, it has helped me with life. I can not wait for her to come out with the next one.I feel this book is worth the $20 I spent on it and I would recommend it to anyone that needs a little mental, get your head in the game type help.

I Love this book it has been very helpful me to keep going and pushing through various obstacles. If your looking for a play-by-play concerning exercises or how-to's. This isnt for you. But this book is great at delivering concepts and i thoroughly enjoyed the read.

I am not gonna lie, I only meant to download a sample of this book. I accidentally bought the book and decided to make the best of the situation and read the book. I have read lots of books about barrel racing and always enjoy learning new methods and skills to add to my "training toolbox". This book was a huge disappointment. I felt that $19.99 was a lot for an e-book and especially after I read the book. I had a hard time making myself read the book. Lots of common sense material and a lot of stuff about the mental aspect of competition. Perhaps if you are looking for information about the mental side of barrel racing perhaps this book would be for you.Even more disappointing was that the format came across my kindle very poorly and there were lots of broken and disorganized sentences & paragraphs making it even harder to read :(

I'm finishing reading "Secrets to Barrel Racing Success" - the first volume in a 2 books series - which is the key to becoming not only a better barrel racer, but a better horse trainer, better horseman, and above all, to really make a HUGE DIFFERENCE in our HORSE'S LIVES! She allows us to travel new pathways and shows new possibilities to make horse's lives better and to train them in a way that is kind, gentle and effective, based on their willing to work together with the rider and becoming trully CONECTED! She goes beyond just training horses, she works with the rider's and horse's body, mind and emotion, things that not many barrel racer mention and for what I've been looking for so many time 'till now!If you're a horse person It is a "must read"!

Heather breaks it down in simple terms and doesn't sugar coat it. This is a good book for the basics. A lot of it is common sense, but is it common sense if you aren't considering it in the first place? It's nice to have it pointed out, and this is what Heather does in this book.

Heather' s simplicity in her writing continues to be what draws me to reading her books. I am really enjoying what she has yo say. It follows a path I have been following for years now. It is a compliment to what I have been learning. I like th at she has taken the approach she has. It is something everyone needs yo learn. It is another great read.

I took a chance with this book as i was stuck and not knowing how to move forward, but This book has changed the way i think, ride and run barrels. I have not had a lesson in barrel racing or attended a clinic in over a year, but by reading this book and all the articals on barrelracingtips.com i now have a horse that is running 1st division barrel times and has come leaps and bounds in the last year with the help of this book. as Heather says 'Applied, knowlage is power' and it is so true, i wouldnt of gotten the results i did if i didnt apply myself to improvement. But i did and it has made the world of difference. i highly recomend this bok to every barrel racer, no matter what level you are at it will put you in the right direction and get you well on your way to winning!thank you so much Heather Smith, you are a true gem to the world of barrel racing.

My First Book of Girl Power promises to show girls how wonderful they can be, by introducing them to some of DC's iconic super heroines. Instead it gives us a few pages of different characters and a few lines of text about how great the character shown in.So if you want your toddlers to learn about Raven's powers or Black Canary's sonic scream this might be the book for you, but if you want your daughters to learn about their own potential this book has nothing.None of DC's handful of women of color are mentioned, the group is entirely white. I wonder if anyone even thought of including characters like the African-American heroine Vixen or Katana from Japan.The art is bright and clean, and probably the book's best feature. But the book obviously just uses stock artwork from the 80s over generic backgrounds. It probably took about 15 minutes to lay the book out. The artists are not identified but I would guess most are done by Jose Garcia Lopez who did most of the artwork for DC's licenses in the 80s. If soit certainly would have been nice to mention his name somewhere.EDIT - Yes it was almost certainly his work, I found the cover image in this blog - http://grantbridgestreet1.blogspot.com/2011/11/jose-luis-garcia-lopez.htmlA bit of rewriting could improve this book tremendously. For example when the author talks about Wonder Woman making people tell the truth young readers might be asked if they think it's good to tell lies. Instead of focusing on Black Canary's sonic scream, the author could have mentioned how she worked for years to be a great martial artist and prompt young readers to work hard, That's what I do when reading it to my girls. But DC didn't take that obvious step.I've been a fan of DC for years, and that's why I picked up this book. But as a father I recognize the difference between a book that uses famous characters and one that's just an extended ad for them. This book unfortunately is just an ad for DC's stable of characters and is not worth your time or money.

Always apprehensive about "girl power" books, especially with superheros. Found a lot that talk about heroines (usually Wonder Woman) but focus on her pretty bracelets or tiara. Hardly the recognition these women deserve.In this book, each page focuses on a different heroine, there are about 8, I believe. It talks about their strengths and what makes them unique. These are things like bravery, computer programing, and strength. This is the perfect book for a lot of strong female role models.

I finally broke down and bought a fourth copy of this book (mention of previous three below) and was surprised and delighted to find D.C. Comics listened to its consumers and added two pages of minority characters. My daughter pointed at the Asian character and said "Super Me!" and she wants an action figure of the African American character. This is my new go-to baby shower gift!Original Review:This has been one of my daughter's favorite books since she was 3 months old. I would have given it five stars but for two reasons: lack of diversity and poor binding. The messaging in this book is positive, clear, and simple but would be greatly improved by including minority heroes. Also, Over the course of nine months the binding has come apart on two copies of this book.Update: our third copy of this book in under a year now has duct tape holding the spine together.

Cute book, and my daughter loves it. As a parent, however, I think it took this book to really make it sink in that super heroes that are women STILL wear skimpy, form-fitting clothes. Not that I expect overweight women in ill-fitting clothes...but these are basically Barbie dolls in a costume. Sigh, girl power...yay?

I was hoping this would be a book with a super hero story in it, but nope just explains what each female super hero does. It was a let done. I was looking for a look how a female saved the day story, but didnâ€™t get that. Although still shows them a woman can do great things just not through a story.

This book is great because it highlights different features about these women superheroes and reinforces the message to our little girl that it is okay to be all different things and still be a strong woman. We also like the message about teamwork. The best part is that our little girl shouts out "Batman!" whenever she sees the Batgirl page. We'll work on the identity confusion later :)

I bought this book for my 2 year old daughter and 5 year old son. Itâ€™s not much of a story-line but the point of showing strong women and using empowering adjectives that have nothing to do with the way they look on the outside feels important. I read this to my youngest the same way I would a positive mantra for myself. I like to think just hearing and seeing the positive attributes and connecting those traits with women is helping reinforce positivity and strength. Good buy.

I have a son and daughter and they both like superheroes. I appreciate that this book highlights the girl superheroes as I think itâ€™s important for both my son and daughter to see strong and smart women. Now if only there were more books like these so that it was just the norm and not the exception!

We really enjoyed this book. I've read the more critical reviews and the points are well taken. It's not the best that it could have been but it is pretty great for toddler level and head and shoulders above some of the other books pushed on little girls at this age. Although the book is not all inclusive of all the female heroes that inhabit the comic universe, it does touch on the ones that they are most likely to encounter in mainstream pop culture. The same criticism could probably be leveled at many of the superhero books aimed at boys as well. As it says, it is the "first book" of girl power, and it does just that - serves as a solid introduction to the fact that females are heroes also. It is a great stepping stone that opens the door to a conversation about the wide and wonderful world of mighty girls. Embellish to suit your own child and tastes.

A tale about two lifelong best friends in Jaxson and Mirabelle and the bumpy road they had to take to hopefully find each other at the end. It's the kind of book that simply made me feel good. I fell into an easy rhythm right from the start and I honestly did not want to put it down.Told in both past and present, which is completely necessary and never felt the least bit tedious, we truly get the whole story. The whys of the fine line of the love/hate that Mira feels for Jaxson. We get to witness firsthand all the horrible teenage angst and the dopey ways in which hormonal boys manage to hurt those closest to them by just being a guy. With each new moment of bad behavior, told from Mira's POV, when Jaxson would manage to damage her heart once more, I cringed for her. Thankfully, the chapters in the present gave us a stronger Mira. Still battling harsh memories and still trying to figure out how to be around Jaxson without losing her very soul all over again.Oh my goodness. The angst. The longing. The love. All of it is there for the taking as Jaxson finally pulls his head out of his a$$ and is relentless in claiming his girl, his best friend, his Bells for good. But I was so angry at him for what he put Mira through. The bad decisions, the miscommunication, the rush to judgment. It just continued to get worse and worse as her past thoughts continued to threaten what her heart truly wanted in the present.Even though she put Jaxson through the wringer, something he most definitely deserved, I was happy that Mira found her strength as a 21 year old and she stood her ground, not wanting to be anything more than friends. The almost-constant nudging from well-intentional Mums in Anne and Vanessa, definitely tipped the scales in Jaxson's favor and provided the much-needed comic relief from all the intensity they and I both witnessed. Their own stories were told in the background and that definitely added an additional rich layer to this book.Combined with great and some not so great, secondary characters, 5,331 Miles is quite simply a wonderful look at the trials and tribulations of young love. Even when both Mira and Jaxson were beyond frustrated with how their story continued to unfold, there was always that hint of fate that they would beat the odds and find their happy in each other's arms once and for all.With the most satisfying of conclusions, I happily give 5,331 Miles a huge 5 stars!!

A NICE READ but could have been better....MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS.....Okay, so this is my first book by Willow Aster. I decided to read this because I saw Christine Brae and Tarryn Fisher posted this book and I thought, it was Tarryn and Christine, so this must be really good. SO, anyway, I started a sample of this book on my Kindle yesterday morning and bought it immediately after I reached the end of the sample page. I finished this book last night... or I say at 12:30 in the early morning today. I skipped a few words though (alright, I cheated a bit) but I was restless and I wanted to read what happens next. I can't say that I loved this book, but I liked it. But this is the first book (as far as I can remember) that I rooted for the underdog instead of the main character. And I'm talking about the guy here. Okay, I liked Mira. I liked that she's honest and straightforward and she didn't hide her feelings in those situations when others could have done the opposite. I liked her journal entries and the way she talks to her inner self. I liked her attitude, her personality. The only thing that I didn't like about her, is whenever she said she want's to just be friends with him and push him away, but then spend time with him again. She's hot one minute and cold the next. Jaxson on the other hand, he was a bit of an *hole to me. The way he treated her all their high schools years, it didn't sit well with me. He's her bestfriend. He loves her? Why didn't I feel it? He loves her but he kept on running away from her. Did he love Heather? What was his true feelings for her? He put Mira aside while enjoying other girls because he felt he was too young? Because he didn't want to rush Mira? That's not the way for me. It was actually an easy way to lose a girl. That's one reason why I loved Miles. He has a very little part on this book, just appearing at the right moments, but it was always almost everything. He was the one who were there for her every time Jaxson fell short. He was the one who stayed with her whenever Jaxson ran away. I hoped he fought harder though, because he always gave way. Why does the good guy always step aside?! Honestly, weird as it may seem because it's really not usual for me to like the supporting character better, but I did really root for him in the last chapters of this book. I was actually hoping Mira don't end up with Jax, but with Miles. Anyway, so that's my thought. On the other hand, this book made me feel young and happy. There were angsty parts which I loved. I hoped there's more. The ending was satisfying, I liked that it was that way. Seems like I like Jaxson after all. Not better than Miles, but maybe equally.Would I recommend this book? Yes.

I knew zero, ziltch, nada about Amateur radio. I bought this book and after studying it for one month I passed the test on my first try! I've already ordered and received his next book to study for the General Class. The series is only to pass the FCC test, so if you're looking for more, this isn't for you, but you have to be licensed for this art, so with that said, this is the ONLY book you'll need for your Technician Class test! Make sure you get the one that covers years 2018 - 2022 as we're now in that test cycle.

I used this to pass my Technician test. I scored 35 out of 35. I used the General version of this book to pass my General Amateur on the same day. I only missed 2 questions on that one. Excellent series of books. Brilliant method. KG5ZRF

I was expecting more, but it will definitely help you to prepare and pass the test... Some questions were never mentioned in main section of the book and only present in Quick Summary (i.e. Receive Filter Bandwidths, hint: memorize them).

Edit: Passed my General with this series back in December. So, using this book I passed my Tech test this evening missing only 1 question.I was initially concerned with only learning the answers without any subject knowledge, but the first half of the book gives you more than enough information and examples to know what's going on.I'm ordering the book for the General and looking forward to passing that in due time as well.Highly recommend!

I purchased all the books in this series. I recommend that you spend a minimum of ten hours reviewing/studying the question pool before starting to read through this. If you do so, the book will just flow and will reinforce what you already studied. I went from zero to extra in one sitting. Trust me, if I could do it, then you can too if you put in the time to learning the material & familiarizing yourself with the different question pools. KX4NT, 73s

This book gives you all the right answers, unlike most books that give you all the possible answers. My 16 year old passed his Technician test on the first try after about a week and a half with this book. I wish this book was around when I first got my ham license!

This book was extremely helpful in studying for my Tech license. As a matter for fact, I just bought the version for the General class as I am now working on that. If you really want to delve into things a bit more and actually obtain more knowledge than just passing the test, I would also suggest getting the ARRL license guides as they will explain things in more detail. But this book is better for actually studying for the test. They work well together. Of course, if you just want to memorize the answers, then this will do it for you.

I bought this book along with the ARRL Hame Radio License Manual to study for my exam. I found that this book was superb at getting you ready, telling you what you needed to know and doing it in a manner that was simple and fun. I just came back from my Technician exam and easily passed. Make sure you get the book with the latest question bank for the test. I can't stress enough how much this book helped. Buy it!

About the Author

Arundhati Roy studied architecture in New Delhi, where she now lives. She is the author of the novel The God of Small Things, for which she received the 1997 Booker Prize. Educational but repetitive. This is a collection of essays and lectures so often Roy repeats what she has to say for different audiences. However, she challenges us to imagine a better world.

Great book and amazing author!!!
