This map was quite useful for finding my way around Taipei. It includes three maps at varying levels of detail, plus a diagram of the metro (MRT). The most detailed map covers an area of 13.2 by 10.0 km, and shows all streets and lanes. The least detailed shows northern Taiwan as far south as Hsinchu City in a space of 7 by 11 inches.In addition to English (romanized) names, the names of major streets and cities and districts are shown in Chinese too. Personally I would have liked for more items to be identified in both forms, as it is often impossible to know how a name should be pronounced from the romanized spelling alone.The map includes an index of major streets, buildings and places.The map has an attached cardboard cover (4.25 by 10.25 inches) which can be annoying if you were hoping to fold it up and put it in your pocket.The MRT map may be out of date by the time you get it, because new lines continue to be added. Check online at the Taipei Metro web site for the up-to-date map.

I've worked my way through the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda and they are anything but an easy read. The prose of a millennia past is something of a hot mess. Gaiman has done all of the painful research for us and given us the old stories gift-wrapped in tight, modern language and a clarity and singular narrative that old Snorri Sturluson was incapable of providing. If you want new and exciting stories about Thor and the gang, pick up a Marvel Comic book or Rick Riodan's Magus Chase series. But if you have a genuine academic interest in the old Norse stories, you'll learn more from spending a day with Gaiman's Norse mythology than you will learn from spending a year sifting through the Prose and Poetic Edda and it will be a hell of a lot more fun.

This is genuine storytelling in the oral tradition. It is deliberately written as if you were listening to a grandmother telling the tale around the fire. Picture her waving her arms and leaning forward to emphasize a point, her voice going gutteral and silken interchangeably as she voices a giant or the Trickster Loki.A prime example is the story of how poetry was born. "It is a long story, and it does no credit to anyone: there is murder in it, and trickery, lies and foolishness, seduction and pursuit. Listen.It began not long after the dawn of time, in a war between the gods: the Aesir fought the Vanir. The Aesir were warlike gods of battle and conquest; the Vanir were softer, brother and sister gods and goddesses who made the soils fertile and the plants grow, but none the less powerful for that."It is a great story, with a perfect comedic last line.I had this idea that Norse mythology was dire and bleak. A mythology that ends with Ragnorök, the death of the gods and the end of the world doesn't sound entertaining. I couldn't be more wrong. For one thing, Ragnorök is the end of one cycle of the world. Like Wagner's Ring, the world will start over again, just as it once did to usher in the time of the gods.I have read other books by Neil Gaiman, and so far, this is my favorite. I thought the writing exceptionally evocative. Obviously, Gaiman had some amazing original material to work with, but this was great fun to read. It brings fabulous images to mind, such as this from "Hymir and Thor's Fishing Expedition": "The grandmother with nine hundred heads killed each ox, skinned it, and tossed it into her enormous cooking pot. The pot boiled and bubbled over a fire which hissed and spat, and she stirred it with a spoon as big as an oak tree. She sang quietly to herself as she cooked, in a voice like a thousand old women all singing at the tops of their voices at once."I usually buy paperbacks, but I got "Norse Mythology" in hardback, because the cover of the hardback is beautiful. The details of Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, are raised and the hammer glimmers. The story of why Thor's hammer is short-handled is included in this collection. Most of the depictions of the hammer in Viking jewelry and carvings show the handle even shorter than on the book cover.5 stars and a book to re-read with great pleasure!Happy Reader

First off, let me just admit that I'm a Neil Gaiman fan boy. I love everything he's written. I live his style, his humor, his language.The thing is...none of that's here. What we have is a more or less generic retelling of a few of the more famous Norse myths. If you're already familiar with them (which I am), then you'll find these retellings uninspired.I'd recommend this book to anyone who hasn't read any Norse myths. Its an adequate introduction. Otherwise, there's no real point in bothering.

I wanted to have a fun read of Norse Mythology. Neil Gaiman provides that. He starts where he should, which means you have to start like you are a 5 year old first listening to a fable by the fire light. You have to meet these characters somewhere. Just a little later you will get the fun stories and the logic, or lack thereof, of these characters and worlds will play into the structure provided in the first pages.There are no illustrations, leaving illustrated editions for some future artist. I appreciate this. I get to use my own imagination guided only by Gaiman's clear prose.The stories are clear and concise. There is very little plodding, even when plodding is the activity in the story.The book is properly designed. Great typeface, excellent page layout, nice weight to the paper. Unlike many current books your eyes don't trip on a minefield of typographical errors.This book is what it is, and that is a lot. It isn't Stardust, Coraline, or American Gods, and you should not expect it to be.

I bought this book right when it released at midnight and being hard to put down, I read it completely through the night. It was a fairly quick read but very enjoyable. As I recently read my first novel by Gaiman, I was interested in his writing style and intrigued to hear he would be retelling Norse Mythology.Coming into the book, I only knew the basics of Norse Mythology so I was excited to learn more about it. It is clear Gaiman has a great interest in the subject and he put a lot of care into it. These are stories that have been told over and over again and this is another retelling to pass through the countless generations these stories have survived.He retells the stories as chronologically as you can, and keeps the story flowing as it jumps around each chapter telling a new story and each story just as interesting as the last. The stories he chose were all fascinating, there wasn't a single one that was boring.If you want to find out more about Norse Mythology this is definitely a fantastic read and a good place to start.

My daughter loves Barbie and she loves reading, so this seemed like the perfect book for her. I do like that there are multiple books for a decent price, but even the Level 2 books do not seem as complex as some of our Step into Reading Level 2 books. The good thing about these books is that they can help peak the interest of a beginning reader who is struggling with confidence. My daughter enjoyed reading them, and she frequently flips through the book to reread parts, so that is good enough for me.

I bought these for my granddaughter for her birthday. She is in kindergarten and just learning how to read. She loves Barbie and loves to read these books. I think being a good reader is the foundation of all education. These books have captured her attention and has helped her learn sight words. She gets a big kick of pointing out the words she knows and accepts the challenge to sound out some words as well. These are great books. An added bonus is these books are a good way to remind her she can be anything she wants to be when she grows up.

This was purchased as a gift and is too late to return. First and last stories are not correctly printed and stories are not complete. Three middle stories are fine.

I have six children of my own and teaching them to read is an important challenge. I think the Barbie story collection is GREAT! It "Hits the Spot" perfectly. The book uses a lot of high frequency words. It starts off a little easy and each story gets a little more challenging. The content of the book is nice too. My daughter loves it.

My 6 year old loves to read these stories. We rented it from the library at first. And then bought it because she liked it so much.

My beginning reader loves this book because she can read it herself, with a little help on some of the words. Great collection, and much cheaper than buying each book individually.

I didn't realize this was a single book with five stories within it until I received it but it's a great book for young kids

My 5yo received this for her birthday and promptly read the whole thing the next day. She loves it and has continued re-reading it often. If you have a new reader and they love Barbie, then this is ideal. They may need help with a few words and names, but overall it's great!

She was a couple of years older, from a wealthy family , while he was from the wrong side of the tracks and a talented mechanic. But one night changed their lives forever. Sacrifices were made for love , sending an innocent young man to jail for 10 years.Cassidyâ€™s guilt has made her the woman she is today.What happens from the moment he is out of jail to the end will be a rollercoaster of heartbreaking moments that will make your heart ache and the tissue box a necessity. But in the end , will they go their separate ways once again sacrificing their love, or will they finally reach their HEA?This engaging story with itâ€™s complex characters is one not to be missed. I canâ€™t wait to see what else this very talented author has in store for us.I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Torque was just releases from prison after serving a ten year sentence for vehicular homocide that he didnâ€™t commit. Cassidy his teenage crush is there to meet him but he knows he will never be good enough for the rich girl he once knew and has always loved so he sends her away. He just wants to get home and find a job working on diesel truck and just maybe one day own his own shop. Cassidy was the one driving that night and wanted to come clean but Torque would not let her he just wanted to protect her so for the past ten years she has devoted herself to serving others and now has adopted a son and is trying to adopt his younger twin sisters. She wants to adopt them with Torque but since he was recently released from prison they will not be approved. Can they stay together and complete their family or will they have to go their separate ways? Wonderful story well written and great characters.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was such a touching story. The author has created very good and strong characters that make it so easy for the reader to glide into the story. This was not an everything is rosy kind of tale, but involves some very real issues that our society as a whole faces in its' populace. However, the writer has taken that situation and created a book that is heartbreaking, beautiful and so very touching. This is the first book in a new series by Ms. Gussman and I am anxious to read the next story, although this can definitely be a stand alone story. This is a beautifully written romance story.It's an emotional rollercoaster ride to love.Cassidy stands outside of the prison waiting for Torque to come out.She's afraid Torque hates her.He took the blame and spent ten years in prison for something she did. When he walks out he thinks his eyes are playing tricks on him.What's she doing here. Wow! What a wonderful story. I was a huge fan of Torque from the very beginning and his willingness to sacrifice everything for someone he loves even if the feelings are reciprocated. He serves 10 years for a crime he didn't commit and when he gets out he has nothing and has to start from scratch with a prison record. But, there are people in his corner cheering for his success.One of those, is Cassidy Kimball. She is the reason Torque went to prison and the woman he loves. Cassidy has made major sacrifices, too. Because of the guilt she feels for what happened to Torque she tries to be the best person she can be and not be sidetracked by money, fame and material things. She is trying to make a difference for those who need her help.Is it possible for these two to finally get their happy ever after or is it too late and too much water under the bridge?The character development was amazing and I had a hard time putting the book down. It was everything I enjoy in a good book. There was sweet romance with wonderful characters, clean story with no foul language or descriptive sex scenes, plenty of chemistry and a happy ending. I am excited to read Book 2 about Tough. I was given an arc copy of this book and I enthusiastically offer my review.

Set in Tasmania in a small seaside town, 17 year old Gwen is dealing with loss, not just the loss of her mum and brother, but the loss of all she believes to be the truth. I can't express how moved I was by this story, it is one I can see myself rereading just to immerse myself in Eliza Henry-Jones' words.Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for a copy in return for an honest review.

What I enjoyed about the novel was the fact that friendship was at the centre, and the romantic love was not the most significant relationship in the novel. Friendships are often undermined in a search for love, but each of them are important. The natural environment, like so many Australian novels, becomes a motif of restoration and the past, and how we deal with the experiences we have had. A lovely YA novel.

Impulse buy as most endocrine issues are found by other specialists and not my strongest subject so has been useful but not something I use daily.

I am a nurse practitioner in an endocrinology practice and I have found this book the be a great, quick pocket reference. The information is concise and up to date. I have not found and discrepancies between current recommendations and those in this book. Fits easily in lab coat pocket.My single complaint is that there are no tabs on the side of the pages to quickly navigate to different topics. I have to use the table of contents each time. With the exception of that issue, great pocket reference!

This is a great start-up resource book that I carried with me while doing my endocrine clinical. This book is loaded with good and useful information that can be serve as quick reference. Please note that this is a pocketbook therefore the font will be small. I tried to read the book but end up with sore eyes. Then I decided to use other textbooks/ online resources to supplement the material.

So tiny I need a magnifying glass to read it.

I used this book for my endocrine elective and loved it. Its very informative, short and concise. The only downside is that it doesnâ€™t cover med dosages, but still it is very helpful.

I liked the book overall. I can't say it was a good read though.. A dramatic fall from grace ...not really ! Would I buy it again ? Probably not . Not to steal the thunder of the book..but it was slow reading ...and dry. Shoeless Joe was not a victim , but he was a victim of a poor education mostly which profoundly weakened the general character of the ballplayer he was...Not a tragedy but a OH , WELL ...life's missed opportunity ! The book itself is well documented and mostly an easy read...with a lot research garnered from the sports and town paper headlines.

This isn't the first biography of Joe Jackson but I believe it is the one that is most complete. Author Tim Hornbaker includes a great deal of information regarding Jackson's career with the Cleveland Indians and it isn't until approximately page 150 that the book deals with the birth of the Black Sox conspiracy. Hornbaker realizes that much of this scandal is still not known nor probably ever will be. What was Jackson's role in this fiasco? He was guilty. He took $5,000.00 and wondered where the other $15,000.00 was that he was promised. He was the leading hitter in the series and may have played to win but he did admit his guilt and then recanted his confession. Yes, Jackson was naive and was sucked into the scandal by Arnold "Chick" Gandil who planned to retire at the end of the year anyway and wanted to supplement his retirement with a nice nest egg from the gamblers.We are left to wonder what would Jackson's future have been had the Indians not been strapped for cash and needed to deal Jackson away. It's too bad he was dealt to the Pale Hose, a team made up of separate cliques. Maybe things would have been changed had there not been a festering feud between Sox' owner Charles Comiskey and American League President Ban Johnson.I have two letters I received from J. G. Taylor Spink, publisher of The Sporting News and one of the official scorers of the 1919 World Series and a personal friend of Joe Jackson. Spink states, "They were all guilty."Author Hornbaker has written very interesting books on White Sox owner Charles Comiskey and Ty Cobb and he has added another worthyaddition to anyone's baseball library with this volume on Joe Jackson. The book contains sixteen pages of photographs many of which I haven't seen before.

Very enjoyable read about an almost mythical sports figure. Fall from Grace chronicles the life of Shoeless Joe Jackson, presenting a fair and balanced examination of his career and his culpability in the Black Sox Scandal. The writing style is compact and efficient, and the book is thoroughly researched and footnoted. In some stretches it reads more like a dissertation than traditional sports narrative, but while it doesn't deliver the flavor of the era like Ritter's The Glory of Their Times, it is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I played baseball as a kid. I understand the game. I loved baseball. I still love watching baseball. I am a Chicago Cubs fan, so 2016 was a momentous year for me. I now live in Greenville, South Carolina after living my entire life in Iowa. Anyone who knows baseball knows that the famous Shoeless Joe Jackson was born, grew up, and lived most of his life in Greenville. As an avid baseball fan, I have always been fascinated by the 1919 Chicago White Sox World Series scandal which led to the terms "Black Sox" and "8 Men Out." So I thought it was about time that I read a well-researched book about the "fixing" of that World Series and Shoeless Joe Jackson's association with the events which have kept him out of Cooperstown. Tim Hornbaker did a masterful job of holding my attention from start-to-finish. This "dead ball" era of baseball included some of the greatest men to ever play the game of baseball: Jackson, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. Shoeless Joe's regular season statistics alone qualified him for the Hall of Fame, but, unfortunately, he was caught up in a dishonorable, illegal situation; even if he maintained his innocence until his death in 1951, the bottom line was that he suffered the natural, logical, and tragic consequences of that association. In the scandal's best light, he was naive and foolish; in the worst, dishonorable, greedy, and narcissistic. I give him the benefit of the doubt. After reading Hornbaker's book, I would conclude he was a kind, thoughtful, loving man who unfortunately got caught up in a mess which forever stained his baseball reputation. If you love baseball and an excellently-documented real-life thriller, I would encourage you to read FALL FROM GRACE: THE TRUTH AND TRAGEDY OF SHOELESS JOE JACKSON.

I first heard about Shoeless Joe Jackson when I was a boy and over the years would hear his name mentioned from time to time. The "Field of Dreams" movie brought the name back again. Recently, I watched the movie again and it made me curious so I looked up books on him and this seemed the best. It was a good read and very interesting. I had no idea that he was as great a ballplayer as he was. To be on a par with Ty Cobb and to have influenced the likes of Babe Ruth is impressive. So is his .356 lifetime batting average. He was an interesting character off the field, too. This book covers so many facets of Jackson's life. Knowing his stats in baseball and his impact on the game and the company he kept made it all the more tragic that he was banned from the game. One can only imagine what he could have accomplished, given a full career. I was disappointed in a sense and held back a star because I expected the book to present facts that exonerated Jackson regarding the 1919 World Series fix. Evidence on both sides is presented. Exoneration could not get back the career Jackson missed but it could have him recognized by Cooperstown. It's a shame that a player of his abilities and achievements is remembered more for one ill-advised act than for the years of productivity on the field.

This book is fantastic. Whether you are a baseball fan or historian you will enjoy this well written documentation of one of baseball's greatest.

who could believe that these guys were friends, and then they kill them? not only that they cut off john achord's head, and killed damon wells. they bury them clean up the mess and then chris reports it because it bothers him, at least he has a some guilt. i believe that burl barer could of left out parts of the trials that kept repeating the same details over and over, it makes you loose some interest in the story. could of been better if story line was written different.

The story was interesting to a certain point but I became bored reading it toward the end. I like true crime stories but prefer books written by Ann Rule and M. William Phelps to most true crime writers.

This book was excellent, It was very hard to read because I'm related to one of the victoms but with all the news paper articles I still have there is so much more I never knew about, The one thing that bothers me the most is that both the murderers are out of prison , even went to their 30 year reunion for their high school , If you havn't read the book DO SO and you will see for yourself JUSTICE WAS NOT given to John Achord or Damon Wells , Their murderers are walking free and It makes me sick . I hope they rot in hell. lorna

I am an outdoor enthusiast who likes to take the road less travelled...and get back to the main roads. These gazetteers are invaluable for the traveller who likes to have a good idea of what to expect when they take those roads. You can also program your GPS devices using these maps.

I have a Delorme atlas for 11 US states. They're amazing; detailed, accurate, easy to read and aesthetically pleasing. The BLM land is easy to locate for free camping. Couldn't travel well without them!

I have worn out DeLorme Atlases of Missouri, Illinois and Colorado. I love to travel and a big part of my enjoyment is discovering what any area has to offer off the beaten path.This series of Atlases offers information and locations of historical, geological, recreational and scenic interest and much more than a folding state map could possibly cover. They are highly detailed, large scale (1 inch equals 3.2 miles) show contours, back roads, railroads (even abandoned right of ways), rivers, creeks, old cemeteries, mines, quarries, trails and other details that you would find only on USGS maps. I use these in conjunction with Google Earth and, if you have one of these with you being out of cel or wireless range doesn't matter.

It's hard to say much of anything negative about this product. If you are going off the beaten path in ANY state, you need to buy the Gazetteer for it. In states like Wyoming it can be the difference between getting gas into your car and not.

DeLorme map books are great for trip planning and you can keep them in the vehicle for the states you'll visit. I bought this from one of the Goodwill centers. Goodwill usually ships very quickly but they ship books by the cheapest means so they will be no tracking. It arrives when it gets there. I've ordered literally dozens of books from the different Goodwill stores and always been satisfied.

Valuable resource, always use them on trips in addition to road map and GPS. Know where you are going on a map before you leave to be sure GPS isn't sending you off on a longer route or to Timbuktu...GRrrrrr ask me how I know!!! Too many times!

Greatest thing for finding obscure locations and roads. Great for finding remote photo locations, camp sites and areas for fishing and boat launches.

This atlas is a must have for going off the paved roads in Wyoming (or really any western state) for both planning and driving.My only question is; I'm not sure how often they update these books with changes? It would be nice for them to indicate that. Some trails and/or dirt roads seem to have changed some from when these books were published. But over all the detail is good for being that it covers the entire state. There are some local area maps of state and federal lands that show better detail and seem to be more updated.

Easily one of the best books around. I got around to it a bit late in life I feel like but better late than never. First and foremost, the main character Alex is the biggest draw in. His attitude of trying to get what he wants by any means necessary regardless of who it hurts is something that makes a unique and interesting protagonist. The language of the book is also very well crafted, pretty sure I'm going to be calling milk "moloko" for the rest of my life now. The way the book speaks on juveniles is fascinating to think about and the way it can apply today years after this book been published. I've met all kinds of kids who were up to the wrong things and how they were handled after they got caught and this book really goes into that. It makes you think, "can people like 'Alex' really be corrected from there ways on immediate apprehension or do they simply grow out of it?" Any book that makes you ask big questions about the world around you is clearly a good read.This book is very "adult" and I can't recommend it to anyone that is too young. I would say maybe high school age is the youngest someone should read it.Bought both the Hardcover and Paperback editions. Really like the hardcover because it looks exactly like the original version that was published when the book first came out. Paperback is fine but the material is very thin and slippery. So point being, it's an easy tear if you're not too careful.

He rather, lets it slowly unfold through the exciting events of the story and whether you grasp it or not is left up to you.The language used develops within the story itself and can take a minute to warm up to. The slang that Burgess invented for this novel is not explicitly defined for the reader and some of these words can take a few uses to catch on to, or did for me at least.This is a book to buy, not just borrow from the library or a friend because it gets better and the meaning deeper with each re-read. It is one that I have had since high-school and still go back to every few years and get something else out of it.**Trigger Warning/Content Warning** This book does contain ultra-violence and one scene is of a sexually violent nature. For me it was certainly not enough to negate the overall experience of the novel, but for some who are exceptionally upset by this it may be.
