This is my first ever review - of anything. I am a well-seasoned child and adolescent psychiatric provider. I care for a low-income population and most are foster children. Erin’s story is one that I hear every single week, typically after the child has already been taken from their home. I am often the one however that calls Child Protective Services to have the child taken. This book will forever change my practice. I plan on doubling the time I spend with every at-risk youth so that not one falls through the cracks in my office. It breaks my heart to think about how many adults let Erin and her siblings down, and did not ask enough questions or take the time to report the abuse. What struck me most about this book was reading the child’s view of the abuse, yet told in retrospect through the wise eyes of an adult. Bravo Erin for being brave enough to tell your story... and to the co-author Jenna, this book is a masterpiece! I am usually more disciplined than to stay up late at night on a work night, but I simply could not put this book down. This should be a must read for anyone that works with children in any capacity. Thank you for telling this story. I cannot wait for Part 2!
If this book personally speaks to you, first and foremost, I’m so sorry. But know that at the end of this book, you will feel as if your childhood burdens have lifted somewhat. Not that they ever really leave you, but amazingly 20 years of therapy are literally sandwiched between the covers for the astonishingly lower cost of just under $20, and it will literally make you lighter. You will wish that you knew Erin Blomgren because if you’d had a friend like her, you would have known you weren’t alone in it.If this book doesn’t personally speak to you and you just love a good story, then first and foremost, you’ve made a great choice and you won’t be disappointed. Just know that at the end of this book you will be profoundly grateful for your ‘normal’ life and those that made it possible. And best of all, for all readers, Erin has left plenty of room for another book, which is most certainly a must-read. Her memoir/s is/are very likely to start an #IamErinCole movement.
I read mostly memoirs because I find the truth so compelling. I think most people want to believe that somehow we will make it through and come out better for whatever we have endured, that we, as individuals and as a nation, are resilient. Here's a book whose release at this challenging moment in our history (U.S.), brings hope.If you're looking for a tale that leaves you breathless at the cruelty of humanity towards its children, and the power within those children to somehow get through, read "The Size of Everything." It's fiercely written, yet touching, deeply sad, even frightening, troubling and infuriating, yet humorous. It is all that is human and all that should not be and in the end, it shows how the human spirit can rise above even the most horrendous circumstances. Erin survives, not unscathed, but victorious. It is what I hope for all of us and for our nation.
Erin's honest and bold memoir of her life between abusive homes throughout her childhood and her determination to rise above it all is absolutely inspirational. She is full of strength and forgiveness and love. Her style leaves you feeling personally connected to her and her story. The story and the author are unforgettable.
I don't read a lot of books, I am a busy working Mom and don't have the time to sit down and read. After you read the first two pages, you will be hooked and turn the page to see what the heck happens next! It is written in a way that just sucks you in and keeps you there, in the 1970's (and if you grew up in the 1970's it's total bonus, you will relate to a lot of references in Erin's story). This memoir is so honest and heartbreaking! You will not be sorry that you bought this book, it's a story of a girl that made the best out of so many horrific situations and survived a childhood of neglect and abuse by her parents. A story of a girl that no mater how badly her Mother treated her all she wanted was her love and to love her. So brave to put this down and share it with the world. Incredible!
First the disclaimer, I am not related to Jenna McCarthy. Now I don’t generally read Life Stories - I’m a fiction girl. But I’ve read a few of Jenna’s books, so thought I’d give it a try. Well. It’s mesmerizing and heartbreaking and uplifting and amazing and all the “ingsâ€. Erin Cole is STRONG. As I read, it stayed with me as I moved through my days. I’ve wanted to just wrap Erin’s small self in my arms a hundred times. Her co-author, Jenna McCarthy’s talent with bringing this to life without it becoming too much, is incredible. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
This book is so so good!! Written unbelievably well, I was hooked from the beginning, all the way to the end!! I learned so much from the detailed stories about Erin's childhood and how to now look for signs of abuse not just with younger children, but high school students as well!!! I was moved to tears many times , but Erin's innocent and positive perseverance gave me hope as I pushed through difficult, and very sad parts of Erin's story!! And the pictures added a special touch!! Hoping this will be a movie in the near future!!
This book was recommended to me by a dear friend. I decided to wait until I was finished reading my current book before starting this one—What a mistake. This book hit home and conjured up many memories from my own childhood. Living in a society so focused on helping children and child abuse, it slays me how society turned a blind eye to my own terrible, abusive childhood, just like Erin’s.My own mother used to say things like “sweep it under the rugâ€, “don’t air your dirty laundryâ€, ‘tabooâ€, etc. The behavior of those in charge of children always made us believe it was our fault.Erin, thank you for bringing your story to the front of the class! One of the best lessons of this book should be: “How NOT to treat people.â€
