The book has some interesting ways of presentig the topic but is not for someone with a sound background in physics (in that case you can skip more than half of the book at once). It does expend a lot on basic physics which is not bad, but dedicated to details that are not needed at all for the main subject, which is the principles for engineering in the field of nuclear reactors. Another major problem is the equations editor, very nasty, the equations look nasty with huge parenthesisis where thay are not needed making the reading a bit disgusting. In the nuclear engineering part there are some mistakes but it is not so bad. Another major problem is that for the more interesting examples, they are worked out by programs that are not easyly available, even that some are just academic level stuff, this is a major drawback of many of these books. They should consider some of the more available codes for educational purposes.As a recomendation, try to look the book before you buy it.

Examples are quite frequently incorrect conceptually or incorrectly computed. The writing style is poor and the editor missed many typographical errors. Everything contained in this book is essentially a watered down version of Lamarsh's Introduction to Nuclear Engineering or Duderstadt's Reactor Theory. Quite disappointing.In my honest and humble opinion, this book is not worth the paper it is printed on, not to mention the ink.I did take a course from Dr. Jevremovic, the author, and it was the biggest waste of time of my entire (undergraduate and graduate) college career. To anyone looking to learn about Nuclear Engineering go anywhere but to the UoU while she is there. Not only is it a waste of time, what is taught is incorrect so you have to try twice as hard to "unlearn" what the program teaches you. Don't do it. Just my 2 cents.

I took the class from the professor that wrote this book and it poisoned me away from pursuing a nuclear minor. The book is poorly written and doesnt make much sense at all.

As an introductory Nuclear Engineering or Nuclear Physics textbook, the book fulfills only the minimal requirements. There are none of the marks of a thoroughly constructed book, such as separate sections with supplementary information. These faults were all excusable, until the list of mistakes and typos began to develop. It is inexcusable how blatantly incorrect some of the formulas are in this text. The book needs a serious once-over for corrections.

I am a graduate student in nuclear engineering, so I have read several "introductory" text books over the years. This particular book is not very well written and as previously mentioned includes a lot of physics related information, but offers little in the form of nuclear engineering itself. I would strongly recommend anyone looking at this book obtain Knoll's Radiation Detection and Measurement book for a better description of how the fundamental physics are applied in the real world, and also obtain Lamarsh's Introduction to Nuclear Engineering for a bigger picture about nuclear engineering in general (especially for power reactors). With those two references you can find almost anything you would ever want to know about nuclear engineering fundamentals and more. As for Andrew's comment about blatant errors, that is very true with this book and we had a running tally in class when students found them. I believe it was about 10-15 pages long when the semester ended. Even better, some of the definitions or explanations were verbatim from Wikipedia. So keep that in mind if you are required to use this book for a course.

This second version is very good. Ths is a good text book of Nuclear Physics for Nuclear Engineers. Of course there are other texts, but then there are also many texts about any subject. Maybe the price is a little high.

I’m always reading books about trails, gear, and current clinical interventions. But I’m also looking for inspiration. This book made me yearn for the forest.Iven’s work could be summed up as a book that inspires you to get more of you into nature and to get more of nature into you. It begins by thinking about ways to embrace nature. Ivens prescribes a sort of baptism by immersion, immersing ourselves in the dirt, the air, the water, the hills and valleys and all that nature has to offer. For the those that have never hiked a trail, she also suggests a less “hilly” approach or a baptism by sprinkling.Ivens has structured most of book around the seasons. If you’ve spent much time in the forest know that every season brings different treasures, from fungi in the summer to Ice Ribbons in the winter. Her book has a pleasant, sentimental tone and personal style that reminded me of a series of journals, that I inherited from my mother. I was thinking of “Stillmeadow Seasons,” written by Gladys Tabor, as read “Forest Therapy.”I discovered her Mindfulness Exercises and the Testimonials from “embracers” throughout the book. They were akin to finding those delicate woodland flowers or nervous little toads. You stop and embrace and move on. Ivens provides several ideas for getting you into nature. These include hiking, walking on a beach, or visiting a farm. Camping near a stream is one of my ways to embrace nature.If you want to get more of nature into you, Ivens suggests bringing the smells of nature into your home, and adding plants that add green to the color palate. I bring nature to me by opening the windows on cool nights and wrapping up with a heavy blanket.Ivens has provide a map for finding nature, a legend for overcoming obstacles and waypoints to help orient us to where we are and where we’re going. In her introduction, she suggests that this book isn’t necessarily for outdoor extremist. I beg to differ. If I could give this book 6 Stars, I would! First of all, the theme of using the seasons to improve our lives is really intriguing. With modern conveniences we can largely ignore the seasons, at least in any deep and meaningful way, just as we can mainly ignore the time of day or night if we choose (See also When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, by Daniel Pink). Electricity can make it warmer, cooler, lighter, darker. But the impact on the body is still there, at least in part. Forest Therapy is all about getting back in touch with the real world, the one that has nights, days, evenings, mornings, fall, winter, spring and summer—sunsets, waves, storms, fog, falling leaves, and the smell of pines and aspens. And, according to Ivens, this can have a significant influence on our lives, happiness, and health. As she puts it: “A life in the great outdoors…Reduces blood pressure and heart rate…Reduces anxiety, anger, depression, obesity, PTSD… and ADHD… Restores focus and attention span… Improves sleep…” and the list continues.When I started the book, I found myself naturally skeptical about such broad claims, but after doing several of the recommended exercises I realized I was no longer focused on verification or even logic—I transitioned to something better: real enjoyment. Sometimes a bigger logic is at play in life, something akin to “Get better sleep and you’ll feel better”, or “Eat fewer sweets and fast foods and more salads and vegetables, and you’ll have more energy”. Turns out these really work, whatever the labs and the elaborate studies promote. Same with “forest therapy”. But this book is more than just a great travel guide on feeling more happiness, relaxing at a whole new level, and enjoying the week a lot more (though it worked for me in all these ways); it’s also a really fun read, like a great classic novel or beach reading from your favorite author.I loved the stories, the quotes, the uplifting thoughts—some new, some reminders of what I once knew but stopped applying. In fact, this is a really great book, and an extremely fun read. For example, the book starts with a quote from Lord Byron: “There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more.” If that’s too flowery for your taste, the very next sentence kicks off the book: “Who hasn’t felt happier after a walk in the woods, a picnic in a park, or a swim in the sea?” And it gets even better from there.Bottom line: This is a book for our time. It is an underground antidote to a rat-race world of work, concrete and steel, freeways and traffic, anxieties, stresses, errands, deadlines, emergencies, and to-do lists, and it really works. It’s like a great novel that provides relaxing escape and combines it with a “how-to” approach to keep the good feelings going even after you put down the book. It could be called Pride, Prejudice, and Relaxation! Or The Hunt for Red October and Putting a Lot More Smiles on Your Face. Loved it. Excellent read.

I've found that this commentary is very helpful on a number of points. It provides a wealth of relevant resources that I've typically not found in other commentaries (I'll illustrate that in a moment). He deals with the Hebrew exegetical ideas and source issues without spending a lot of time (no bogging down in minutia as some have a tendency to do). His footnotes do contain the minutia on textual issues that some require or desire. Yet in the main text of his commentary he deals with crucial textual issues if they affect the exegetical outcome. That's helpful, especially his pithy summaries of the various views. Summaries are well done in this commentary.The second volume has over 700 pages of information on Isaiah 40-66.Since it may be the greatest passage in Isaiah, let me zoom in on how he handles the fourth Servant song. (Isaiah 52:13 to 53:3). For this section he gives 37 pages of information. He breaks the passage down into the following outline:a. Astonishment and Rejection (52:13-53:3)b. Punished for others (53:4-6)c. Unjustly punished (53:7-9)d. Many made righteous (53:10-12)He provides his own unique translation for each one.In section a. Astonishment and Rejection 52:13-53:3 Oswalt prefers the translation in 52:15 of the Hebrew 'Yazzeh' [sprinkle] to be interpreted as 'startle' because of the parallelism meaning. He also interacts with a variety of other opinions, including a footnote on 52:14 that introduces some technical points about protasis and apodasis as support for his position. They really do make the most sense of all the options (imo).I was convinced by his points. For application ideas, see Oswalt's NIVAC on Isaiah. In that volume, which I also own, he draws out practical application to Philippians 2:5-11 as he discusses the idea of sacrificing for others. Then he draws out contemporary significance to this passage in his NIVAC by focusing on Accepting the offering by an appropriate response to what Jesus has done for us. He has many preachable points in this section.Overall, Oswalt has written a worthy commentary that I believe is an excellent addition to every pastor's library. I also have found Alec Motyer's commentary on Isaiah to be very helpful, especially for a quick evaluation of literary style and outline ideas.Oswalt's NIVAC commentary won the Gold Medallion Award. I think this commentary I am reviewing here, the NICOT, is worthy of an award. It's that good.Back to the passage I was using to illustrate Oswalt's NICOT Vol 2 with.At the end of his commentary on Isaiah 52:13-53:12, he has an Excursus.Actually it is a select bibliography on the passage. However, the bibliography is organized into categories:The Identity of the ServantNew Testament and Early Christian InterpretationJewish InterpretationExegetical and Theological StudiesAlthough several of the bibliographical entries are obviously in German, and useless to most of us, most of them are in English.

Dr. John Oswalt is without question one of the best scholars on the book of Isaiah. His 2-volumn study is first and foremost of definitive works on the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. Dr. Oswalt has done a video series on the book of Isaiah for the Francis Asbury Society. His multi-segment video is an excellent means to get to observe Dr. Oswalt in a classroom setting. Anyone interested in the book of Isaiah this work is a must read and a valuable asset to your personal library.

I bought this book to help me lead a home study on Isaiah, which I "knew", but not in depth the way I "know" the NT. These 2 volumes are an excellent guide. They provide excellent insight to the historical context, have in-depth discussions on the more difficult parts of the book (for example 1 author or multiple), and takes time to discuss the theological impacts of the text along the way. If this is a book of the Bible that you want to know in greater detail, I highly recommend you purchase this 2 volume set to help you in your studies.

Oswalt's commentary on Isaiah comes in two volumes, but really should be read as one work. With that in mind, I will post the same review for both volumes of this commentary.Oswalt takes a largely amillennial approach to the text. He is a sane exegete and especially careful about pressing poetic-prophetic language to mean more than it should. In critical issues, Oswalt writes from a conservative perspective. He occasionally engages the drivel of scholars, who think Isaiah should be chopped up into tiny pieces and assigned to different authors, but the bulk of this commentary is devoted to explaining the text of Isaiah. He writes with a "big picture" view of Isaiah's message, while still having enough space to discuss items of particular interest in the details. The commentary does not demand knowledge of Hebrew to be useful (but a little bit never hurts!) The introduction was useful for summing up historical information and appreciating the situation of Isaiah's day.Oswalt does a brilliant job exposing the hypocrisy of those that would praise the theology of Isaiah, but then try to re-assign the Cyrus prophecy to a date that places it after the fact. Repeatedly, Oswalt demonstrates from Isaiah's argument in chapters 40-48 that the whole argument for Yahweh's superiority to idols rests on the fact of His ability to know Cyrus' actions over a century in advance. In essence, to deny the integrity of Isaiah's prophecy demands an outright rejection of the book as a whole, since it would otherwise be presenting itself in deceptive fabricated terms.The main reason I give Oswalt five stars is because I believe he has done better than any commentator to date in coming to grips with the main thrust of Isaiah's message. For the first part of the book (1-39), Oswalt sees the trust in God as the predominant issue facing Israel. The basic question is whether Israel will choose to ally with the nations, or to trust God for her salvation. For the second part of the book, (40-66), Oswalt argues that "Servanthood" is the binding theme, namely as the means of Israel's salvation in spite of their shortcomings. The central question he raises repeatedly creates a tension between the ideal and the actual, when he asks, "How can this Israel become that Israel?"This is not to say that Oswalt's explanations are completely flawless. In a big two-volume work such as this, everyone is bound to find something to disagree with. For instance, I found myself unconvinced by his suggestion that Immanuel is really Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. I also found it odd that Oswalt appears to believe in a final gathering of historic national Israel (for instance, his comments on 11:10-16), a viewpoint which I believe ignores the crucial redefining of "Israel" in the NT. On the whole though, I do not feel that these disagreements are significant enough to detract from the overall value of this work.Ultimately though, I consider this book to be one of the most helpful expositions of Isaiah available today (outside of the Bible itself, obviously!), and I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the message of the prophet.

Excellent commentary. You don't have to be a scholar, minister, or Hebrew student to appreciate this commentary. All the fore mentioned will benefit, but any serious student of the Bible will be enriched.

One of the most thorough commentaries on Isaiah. This will probably become the new standard. I have found this useful, along with Constable's notes (to get my theological take) while preaching through this portion of Isaiah. I like Oswalt's work even better than Young's (which has been the standard).

Just a fair warning: This book does not have any code. It will not teach you how to code an Android menu or title screen; it is purely a design book that examines various design frameworks and templates that have worked for other apps. And it excels at doing so: there are many different designs presented in this book that will give the reader the confidence to not only implement a practical design framework; but also takes you through the creative process of designing a layout and the caveats that come with designing each layout. One of the high points about this book was it's treatment of the differences between iOS screen and android screens. This treatment was so in depth I came out of this book with the knowledge about the differences in the design philosophies of iOS and Android. I was give this book a very high recommendation for anyone that wants a solid introduction on designing an Android layout.

I expected a book on design patterns as defined by Gamma. Instead it's about ux. Poorly named book that doesn't deliver what it claims.

I've come across a number of articles written by Nudelman and have purchase another of his books. This one is excellent. I think that if more programmers took the time to understand the nuances of design covered in this book, the Android app market would be improved by an order of magnitude.

Exactly the kind of book I was looking for. The pictures, the demonstrations, and the discussion were all perfect. If it does nothing, it will stimulate you and get you thinking deeper into the user experience and user interface of your application. Anyone interested in programming for Android should read this before getting started on a serious project. Will be re-reading this for months to come!

The book contains a lot of insights, some of which are pretty obvious. On the whole there isn't a very cohesive theme to the book. There is a lot of do this, don't do this. I would rather have had some larger strategies that these particulars could relate back to. I think the author tried to do this, but not very successfully. There are some good ideas in the book though. I just didn't think it was that great.

After seeing some of Justin Chin's work online, I was intrigued and wanted to read more. He has a strong personal style that heavily utilizes rhythm to create momentum within his pieces, which is especially effective as he was also a powerful spoken word artist. He shares honestly and beautifully from his personal experiences, many of which deeply resonated with me, especially about Asian American queer identity. There are many different styles within this collection, ranging from poems of just a few lines to poems of many pages, using free-form as well as prose-poetry style. I especially enjoyed "A History of Geography" and "Pisser."

I was introduced to Justin Chin's work through an Asian American literature course in college. A year later I found myself still thinking about his shocking poems because in class we had only read "Lick My Butt". I wanted to know more so I bought this book. What I found is a collection of beautiful poetry.Some poems are hilarious and in your face and some are really lovely to read. I went ahead and bought some more of his poetry books. I'd suggest this for anyone with an open mind. I think anyone under that condition could appreciate his work.

Reading this collection as a first generation immigrant from Malaysia (as is Chin), I was pleasantly surprised by the synergy of our experiences as I paged through the pieces.Chin's style is raw yet sincere; a titillation of all the senses. From the sterile scent of Dettol, the taste of spicy and MCG-saturated Chinese restaurant food, to familiar alliterations of "Manglish/Singlish", Chin at times teases us with love/hate sentimentalities, and at others, unapologetically shoves the practices and nuances of his desires down our throats. The book's cover and binding fail to stem issues of sexuality, home, memory, colonialism, betrayal, obsession, race, nationality, envy, and beauty from flooding out from the pages. Barbara Crossette takes you on a journey across some of the most mysterious and hidden places on earth. This, however, is not a travel book cocked full of retrospective stories and adventures, often in a very self-serving way. This one has the purpose of informing and entertaining you in a way you will never forget. The adventures serve the purpose of exposing the "real" life of the kingdoms of the Himalayas. In her writings your learn about the countries, the people and the religions. A very talented writer, she reveals the internal mysteries, both spiritual and cultural, of people from places most people will never visit. Make sure to read this book prior to reading any other travel book. At times I found it to be a bit heavy of a read, yet one necessary to understand how that "part of the world" operates and thinks. Historians, people interested in various cultures and even the casual travel reader will learn a wealth of information.

Fortunately I read the reviews and duly noted that the book focused on Bhutan, which was my main interest. Idally the book should be read before and after one's trip to Bhutan. I can now understand better why our seemingly competent Bhutanese guide offered such contradictory, confusing, and incredible explanations for the role of Buddhism in his wonderful country.At times, Crossette's book seemed a little disorganized and served more as a memoir than an analysis of vanishing Buddhist kingdoms.

Interesting history of Bhutan, a bit long and wordy. It did help me prepare for a trip to Bhutan

This is a great book for those with a special in asian religion and history. The author brings to life the sights and sounds of Bhutan, Ladakh and Sikkim.

This is a current review of Bhutan and its modern challenges. I like that it presents impressions in an unbiased, matter-of-fact way and includes the "human" side of their society along with the Gross Domestic Happiness hearts and flowers stuff you see in most superficial treatments of the country. It makes the people more real, and more admirable for the compassionate traits they exhibit. There are also good sections on history and cosmology.

As many others have mentioned, Crossette's biases are evident, but this book nevertheless contains some fascinating insights and is entertaining at times. I'd really give it 3.5 stars.

This book provides a very comphrehensive view of the history of Bhutan and neighboring states. The book ends in the mid to late nineties, thus its characterization of 'modern' Bhutan is no longer accurate.

I hardly ever write reviews, but this book is really excellent. It's the rare programming book that is API-specific but not just a reformulation of the documentation. It's clearly based on long experience and full of information that, as far as I know, is not available anywhere else: measurements, explanations for why things are the way they are, and examples of code that doesn't work the way you might expect. I've been programming Cocoa for almost 20 years, so I had figured out many of the specific points on my own, but I read the book cover-to-cover and don't feel that any of my time was wasted. The writing is concise and filled with little nuggets of insight. The principles are timeless, so I expect this book to remain relevant and even be of interest to programmers using other platforms.

This book is well written, thoughtful, and accessible to beginning developers. If you're new to the platform this is a must-read. If you're an experienced iOS / macOS developer you'll find this book to be like an extended conversation with a long-time expert. It's more than helpful and the author's candor is refreshing. Marcel Weiher has opinions based on deep experience, and he knows the difference between an opinion and an objective fact. This book is rich with helpful examples showing how to circle in upon a performance issue which might not be obvious at first blush. Developers, if you work on a team you'll want your managers to read this book, too. (I am the CEO of illumineX, inc, maker of custom software for large enterprises and consumer software for macOS and iOS. I'm going to give a copy of this book to every developer on my team.)

Very talented writer, lots of useful information. Could use better editing: more than a few typos and the level of the book bounces around a lot.

Marcel is a former Apple engineer who's thoughts and opinions are strong, well-informed and are still well-respected within that large pool of excellent software minds. This book is awesome and if you intend to do anything on a macOS or iOS (or any other Apple platform) do buy and read this book. Wisdom and experience and yes strongly worded pragmatism throughout.I will add to it that Mr. Weiher is well known as an advocate of all of the things SmallTalk brought to Objective-C and you should understand the perspective he presents is that Objective-C is a strong and flexible language. Understanding this will make more sense in reading the book.

Absolutely terrible!

Developing for the Mac for more than 13 years and many other operating systems and CPU architectures for more than two decades, I've learnt a lot about what makes code performant. Yet I still learnt new things and picked up new ideas reading this book. If you're serious about writing performant code (not only) for Apple's platforms, I can wholeheartedly recommend this unique collection of knowledge, opinions and advice.
