From the Author
You've prepared your child for reading - refrigerator magnets down low and easy to reach; letter sounds taught. Your child can proudly spell his or her name. Perhaps he can identify the "stop" and "open" signs as you drive in your car. He or she is ready for the next step into reading. Inside the colorful box, the bright red cover beckons. On the first page, the letters: M - a - t. Your child says the sounds: mmmmm, aaa, ttt. Then, faster: "Mat." Your youngster has read his first word! "Sam", "sat" and "on" complete the vocabulary, and suddenly your child can say, "I read the whole book!"® That is the magic of Bob Books®. After 13 years of teaching 3, 4 and 5-year-olds, watching a child make that giant first step into reading still thrills me. The pride in their eyes, their triumphant grasp of a difficult concept, and opening their world to the excitement of books and reading, has brought me many years of satisfaction. Bob Books® were specifically designed to facilitate that ah-ha moment, when letters first turn into words. By slowly introducing new letter sounds, using consistency and repetition, and stories that fit short attention spans, your child will quickly find his or her own ah-ha moment. We wish your young learner much success and happiness as he or she enters the great adventure of reading.

These books seem simple and short but they work in building the confidence of beginner readers. We are using them in conjunction with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. After the first 7 or so lessons of that book he was able to put it into practice with the first Bob book "Mat". He was so proud that he read it over and over and over to everyone who would listen to him. We've gone through the other Bob books in this collection which he cracks up over the humor in the stories.
My husband and I have a daughter who turned 8 this November and she still couldn't read. She was held back and was placed in the first grade with her 6 year old sister. Seeing her struggle was heartbreaking! We as parents tried EVERYTHING to get her to read. We had her vision checked, we took her to specialist and to tutors and even placed her in summer school. We bought hooked on phonics, and subscribed to all kinds of online "reading programs". We tried the "Teach your kids to read in 100 easy lessons" and NOTHING was working. We were beyond frustrated. Then one day I fell upon BOB Books on Amazon and decided that for 15 bucks it was worth a shot. What did we have to lose?As soon as I started my daughter on these books it was like a light went off! She was READING!! These books are small, short and eaisly laid out so children do not get overwhelmed with too much. Its been about 2 weeks and my daughter is begging to read to us every night. The same daughter who we bribed and begged to sit through just a paragraph of a book just weeks prior with no success. My daughter is now in the process of being moved into second grade and I couldn't be more proud with her success. I'm now buying these books for every mom I know. Thanks BOB Books!
My son is just beginning to sound out words and these books are exactly what I was looking for! It comes with 12 books in the box set. They start with only a few words in the first book. Then they get progressively longer but still with easy to sound out words.
I get that the character Sam is probably supposed to be triangular or conical to differentiate him from round Mat, but he is definitely, creepily, and disturbingly klansman-like, complete with robe and hood. What editor at Scholastic let this slip by?! I'm returning the books and that's unfortunate because the books actually seem to be decent early readers otherwise.
During our reading time, I had a hard time to get my 5yo son's attention on the words of books. Most of the time he only liked to focus on the colorful pictures and scanned quickly at the word lines. So it's difficult to teach him to read and remember even the simple words. I gave Bob books a try and so glad that I picked them, since now the little boy has really focused on the words and learned them quickly, yay! The simple drawing of the books are intentional to withdraw the little ones' attention from the animated pictures, that's the main point. The only thing need to be improved is the connection between the words and the pictures. Sometimes my son can guess them easily based on the pictures like dog, cat, bird, bug without really learning the words. But it's helpful and effective to learn sigh words. I would strongly recommend these books for the very beginning reader to build up their confidence in reading.
These are OK. The text is certainly simple enough, but the "plots" (if you can call them that) aren't all that engaging. My 4.5-year-old can read them, but nearly always chooses Miss Rhonda's Readers over these (which have a better plot and better pictures, but don't seem to be much more challenging).
Each book in the set contains 8 pages of actual words for the child to read with an additional last page that always says "The End." Most pages have 4 to 6 words on them. In this set, book 6 is the challenging book because one page has four sentences and 15 words. Book 6 of the set also has several pages with double lines. We started reading these a couple months before my son's fourth birthday because he had finished all his letter sounds in a Montessori pre-school that year. A friend said her four year old was reading with these books so I said why not. When I we did the first book, I can't say my son was reading them himself right away. I had to help him learn the word in each book one time and then he was doing it himself. By book four he was sounding out words himself. The first time you read a new book in the set it is painful. I make my son master the book he is on before he can go onto the next one. The one exception in this set was book 6, its particularly painful, I think due to that one page with two sets of lines. I am now getting Stage 1 Stories to supplement. My son is beyond excited when he finished a book and has to call grandma to tell her when he has moved on to the next book in the set. It's awesome to see how proud he is of himself. I used to read 4 to 5 books a night to him and now I am lucky if I get in one or two. He is reading the others.
We bought an expensive curriculum to teach my son to read, we spent lots of time working on it, and he didn't learn. So we took a break and played with the Bob books, suddenly he loves to learn to read. I don't know if he can become proficient with this series, but he asking to practice reading his own books which must count for something.
I was skeptical of how well they would work but I’m impressed. All the other good reviews were right. The books are simple enough to keep the child guessing the words, and not too distracting when they’re trying to sound the words out. The books are short, but when they’re done they feel so proud that they read a book all by themselves. If you’re child is not interested or if you think the books are boring, just get a little creative and generate some excitement and they’ll get the hang of it. My almost 4-year old was able to read 2 books on the first day we got them. We’re working on the 3rd book now. Nothing else made her interested in reading. I highly recommend it.
