Highly recommended, and easy to read. Author does a great job of not being too technical , but writing in such a way as you both love and despise Hannibal, excellent scholarship. If you love Greco-Roman history this is a must read.
I enjoyed this reading, good narrative, many historical related elements. I did not like that there are a lot of 'historic spoilers' and maps could have been more elaborated. Anyway I think a great book as first approach to Hannibal and his war
Beautifully written and researched. Gives Hannibal his rightful place as a major figure in the ancient world.
Great book about an amazing general who had the power to fight on!
Never thought the story of Hannibal would be this interesting! Actually, I am not sure why I bought it, but I was glad I did. The author makes the history of is period alive! Great read if you like history!
Superbly written, not a dry spot anywhere.
Quite educational.
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley for free in exchange for an honest review.Hannibal's Oath is a well researched, very accessible biography of one of the most famous military leaders in western history. John Prevas has woven a strong narrative that doesn't waver from chapter to chapter. I particularly like that he is very clear about the suppositions he makes and the potential problems with ancient source material. His endnotes are well written and clarify information exceptionally well. I especially liked the note about the hands-on experiment he did with heating a large boulder and pouring vinegar on it to make it easier to break up (the hypothesized way Hannibal's engineers cleared the alpine trail of a massive boulder).Like many biographies of ancient historical figures, Hannibal's Oath left me wishing for more and decrying the sparseness of primary sources about his personal life.I would happily recommend this book to both the reader with a casual interest in ancient history and the confirmed ancient history buff.
